Devon’s anger toward Cane on The Young and the Restless may have stemmed from his overprotectiveness of Lily. He has fears that Cane’s nice gestures are calculated cues to manipulate Devon’s sister and control the family. But are Devon’s anger and concerns even warranted?

Key Takeaways

  • Devon is suspicious of Cane’s motive.
  • Devon wants to have control over Lily’s personal life.
  • Devon’s inability to forgive might stem from a history of betrayal.

Devon Convinces Himself That Cane Hasn’t Changed

Devon (Bryton James) has a lot of repressed anger lately. He tried to come to terms with the situation involving Mariah (Camryn Grimes). It seems that the two have reached a turning point in their relationship.

Now, Devon is projecting his anger towards Cane (Billy Flynn). He believed that Cane’s latest actions with Malcolm (Shemar Moore) are just tools to work his way back into Lily’s (Christel Khalil) good graces.

Devon has struggled to allow Lily to make her own decisions. He treats her sister like she’s incapable of deciding what is best for her life. Devon claimed that Lily doesn’t have the best judgment call.

What’s Hiding Behind Devon’s Anger?

At first, it seemed like Devon’s anger stemmed from Mariah’s kidnapping attempt. He had a hard time forgiving her for taking Dominic (Ethan Ray Clark). But there could be something deeper happening here.

Devon’s anger isn’t just about protecting Lily or protecting Chancellor Industries. He hasn’t recovered from the trauma of historical betrayal. Devon constantly fears that Cane could relapse into his old, manipulative patterns.

He’s desperate to protect Lily and their family at all costs. But Devon doesn’t understand that protecting them will only push them away. Because of his fixation on policing Cane protecting Lily, Devon has ignored his own relationship issues.

Digging into the Root Behind Devon’s Anger

Devon still feels an inherent, protective ownership over Chancellor Industries. He previously funded Jill (Jess Walton) to keep their company secure. Victor (Eric Braeden) officially handed Chancellor over to Lily.

And now, Lily brought Cane on board to help her run it. Devon viewed Cane as a threat to his family’s legacy. He believed that Cane is an untrustworthy opportunist who could screw them over.

Seeing the man he hates occupying a space in his grandmother’s legacy is enough to make his blood pressure spike. Devon viewed Cane’s corporate return as a direct infiltration of his family’s territory.

The deepest layer of Devon’s anger has little to do with Cane or Chancellor, and everything to do with his internal psyche. Since Devon has faced so much loss in his life, he holds everyone else to an unforgiving standard.
