Kyle Abbott walked away from a “super girl” when he split with Sasha Calle’s Lola — literally. The actress has been hired to play Supergirl in the upcoming Flash movie, which stars Ezra Miller in the title role.
Sasha Calle As Supergirl
Deadline reported that Calle has been cast as Supergirl in the DC Universe feature film. The actress reportedly auditioned along with over 425 performers to win the coveted role.
Flash director Andy Muschietti and DC film exec Walter Hamada and the movie’s producers were blown away by Calle’s “toughness and vulnerability.”
“I saw more than four hundred auditions,” said Mushcietti. “The U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”
Interestingly, Calle and other contenders weren’t told that they were reading for the part of Superman’s cousin and fellow Kryptonian.
Ironically, Helen Slater, who played Supergirl on the big screen in 1984, appeared on YR in 2014 as Dr. Chiverton. Melissa Benoist plays Supergirl on The CW series.
Calle joined YR in 2018 as Lola, the younger sister of Rey (Jordi Vilasuso) and Arturo (Jason Canela). Lola and Kyle (Michael Mealor) embarked on a romance complicated by Kyle’s relationship with Summer (Hunter King). Kyle and Lola wed in what was dubbed the “wedding of the year” but the honeymoon was over after the couple split. During their brief marriage, they had a pregnancy scare and faced interference from Lola’s dad Adrian (Jay Montalvo), who wanted to tap into his daughter’s newfound wealth.
Lola entertained a relationship with Theo (Tyler Johnson), but realized he wasn’t the man for her. The actress has been simmering on the backburner as of late. No word on how this casting will affect Calle’s status with YR. Check out Calle’s reaction to being told she won the role by Muschietti in the Instagram post below. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
