He’s returning to The Young and the Restless, but fans still want to know what the scoop is on Doug Davidson’s absence from Genoa City for most of last year.
Now, the actor is speaking on what happened behind the scenes that led to his temporary exit from the top-rated show!
The Emmy-winning Davidson spoke to Soap Opera News about what led to him having less screen-time on YR in 2018.
Davidson said that after he finished a scene last year as police chief Paul Williams, he was asked to go to then-executive producer Mal Young’s office.
There, the exec informed him he was being taken off contract and that he, Young, preferred that nobody know about the contract switch as it wouldn’t do either the show or Davidson any good.
“I thought that was the nicest take it or leave it I ever heard,” said Davidson, who agreed to go recurring. After appearing for a few months on a recurring basis, a fan asked the actor if he’d been fired. “Seems so” as Davidson’s response. “It was pretty clear they were diminishing the vets.”
Davidson says he passed on coming in to tape three shows around the time of the holidays for a “Christmas Miracle” story.
At the end of last year, we learned that Young was leaving the show and fans wondered if Paul would return. And, indeed he will.
Davidson, who is set to appear on YR again on Monday, March 25, however, is not back on contract. But he says he’s being treated with respect and that he trusts “the people in charge now enough to let me know if there are winds of change.”
