The Young and the Restless isn’t the same without fan favorite and Emmy-winner Doug Davidson in Genoa City! The actor joined the CBS soap in 1978 and has played the part ever since! Now, he’s sharing news of his status with the top-rated serial.
A supporter of Davidson’s asked the actor via Twitter if he was on contract at YR. “No contract,” Davidson tweeted back. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t continue to see the veteran lawman on the show.
Davidson has been a mainstay on YR since his debut. In fact, when the show expanded to an hour, viewers saw the expansion of the Williams clan.
Paul’s parents Carl (Brett Hadley) and Mary (the late Carolyn Conwell) were added to the canvas, as well as sister Patty (played over the years by Lilibet Stern, Andrea Evans, and Stacy Haiduk). Later, a brother Todd (Corbin Bernsen) was added to the clan.
As Paul, Davidson carried storylines on YR for years and had many love interests along the way including April (Cynthia Eilbacher), Lauren (Tracey Bregman), Cassandra (Nina Arvesen), Christine (Lauralee Bell), Isabella (Eva Longoria), and Maggie (Tammy Lauren).
A few years ago, Paul and Christine wed following the death of their pal Katherine Chancellor (played by the late Jeanne Cooper), who knew what YR fans already knew — the two are destined to be together!
Paul has three children — daughter Heather (Vail Bloom, Eden Riegel, Jen Landon) and a son, Ricky (Peter Porte), whom Paul was forced to kill after he turned criminal. He also has a son, Dylan (Steve Burton), with Nikki.
Ironically, on the year of Davidson’s 40th anniversary with YR, the show’s regime at the time switched the actor to recurring status. Despite there being an ongoing murder mystery storyline — the “death” of J.T. (Thad Luckinbill), which would have called for appearances by Paul, he appeared infrequently, and Davidson later confirmed to fans via social media that he’d been taken off contract.
The good news is now he’s back on-screen, investigating crimes, helping Victor (Eric Braeden) flesh out Adam (Mark Grossman), and reminding Rey (Jordi Vilasuso) who’s the boss! The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air time.
