The Young and the Restless recap for May 4-8, 2020, features a dip into the archives for a celebration of the oh-so-complicated love affair between Victor and Nikki Newman.
According to this week’s theme, Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) Newman have lived a lifetime of love. But it’s also painfully clear to anyone who watched the previous week’s offering that this couple has also endured a lifetime of heartache as well.
Any time these two were happy there was always someone or something waiting in the wings to tear them asunder…and sometimes the breakup was the direct result of their own machinations.
For you see, another easily recognized truism about this couple is that lies brought them together, broke them up, and usually brought them back together again. When Victor first became sweet on the exotic dancer he pretended to be the butler who moonlighted as a carpenter – and it was in that latter capacity that he built her a dressing room at her strip club.
Nikki forgave him that trespass, and he, in turn, forgave her for lying about having an incurable illness – well, to be fair, she DID have an incurable lung disease that went into spontaneous remission but then she DID lie about her new diagnosis.
But it wasn’t just impersonations and omissions that vexed this happy pair. There were usurpers like Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), his sister, Ashley (Eileen Davidson) – she who stole Victor’s sperm and bore him a daughter, Abby. We even had manipulative sirens like Cassandra Rawlins and Diane Jenkins to contend with.
But, in the end, the love that existed between Victor and Nikki conquered all. Though it took a lot of trying. And a lot of weddings. And there were tears galore. At least they have two comparatively well-adjusted children to show for it.
Which did you find most shocking this week? The fact that actor Dennis Haybert (aka President David Palmer from 24 and Allstate Insurance representative) portrayed a character?
The fact that Newman Enterprises apparently has an office in Sao Paulo, Brazil? The fact that they did not play Victor and Nikki’s signature love song, Looking Through the Eyes of Love, at their 2002 wedding? Or the fact that Sharon (Sharon Case) has a mother?
Does Miss Doris Collins even know that her daughter is currently battling breast cancer? After all, the heartache that Sharon has caused this poor woman – she is, after all partially responsible Doris’ paralysis – would she really hide her diagnosis from her?
