Now that fans have had a chance to watch weeks of classic The Young and the Restless episodes, it’s the perfect time to ask the question: What kind of story does the #1 daytime drama for decades do best?
Is it couples where YR shines the most? Think Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott). Think Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Billy (Jason Thompson). Think Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow). Think Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and Nick.
Think of how many times those couples have fallen in love, broken up, made up, reunited… and broken up again. Is that a testimony to the power of One True Pairing… or a writing team out of new ideas? How do you think YR fares telling love stories?
Think of Jack (Peter Bergman) and Ashley (Eileen Davidson) using their respective parentages against each other. Think of Jill (Jess Walton) and Kay (Jeanne Cooper) fighting first over Phillip Sr. then Phillip Jr – not to mention the money that came with them both.
Think of Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Theo (Tyler Johnson) learning they’re cousins, and Abby (Melissa Ordway) trying to prove herself to Newmans who never take her seriously. And then there’s Adam (Mark Grossman) and all his issues. Is family drama where YR really stands out?
Most of the family drama and even some of the love stories have to do with business dealings. It’s why Ashley tried to convince Jack that John (Jerry Douglas) wasn’t his father.
It’s why Adam tried to blackmail Victor. It’s even why Devon (Bryton James) and Cane (Daniel Goddard) had issues with Kay’s will. Are business stories really just family and love stories in disguise? And is that why they’re what make YR stand out from the pack?
Let us know what you think YR does best in the poll below. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
