As Arturo, Jason Canela was the first actor to bring the Rosales family to The Young and the Restless. It was only fitting, therefore, that he return for Rey’s wedding to Sharon this past week.
The actor walked back into Arturo as if he’d never been gone, no easy feat since he hadn’t been on the show in quite some time. The show touched upon nearly all of Arturo’s history during his brief stay. For playing all of those beats so accurately and genuinely. Soap Hub is bestowing Performer of the Week honors to Canela.
Along with Noemi Gonzalez (ex-Mia), Canela exited the show after a writing regime change on the top-rated soap. It was revealed that Arturo — not Rey (Jordi Vilasuso) — was the father of Mia’s baby, so they moved back to Miami to start their family. This not only paved the way for Rey and Sharon (Sharon Case) to move forward with their relationship but Abby (Melissa Ordway), Arturo’s ex-girlfriend, moved on to a happy ending of her own with Chance (Donny Boaz).
Canela was brought back not to be just a guest at the wedding. He also re-addressed his dynamics with Genoa City residents. And, the writers wrote in that Arturo was certified to conduct the ceremony, adding to his duties.
Elated at being a dad to little Mateo, Canela brought a light and energy to Arturo that he hadn’t been able to show before now. Any animosity between the two brothers was long gone, however, Rey wanted to make it official. Where there had once been tension between the two, now, only brotherly love remained.
Later, at Society, Arturo reconnected with Abby and met her new husband. While everyone was cordial and supportive, it was clear that there were feelings of regret that things worked out differently than originally intended. Sure, Arturo is happy in Miami with Mia and Mateo, but Canela clearly conveyed that Abby was very important to him — and perhaps always will be.
Officiating a wedding means taking on additional dialogue, but Canela handled the extra workload like the pro he is. Arturo’s truly joyful for his brother and his new sister-in-law and his enthusiasm for their happiness made the wedding extra special.
The actor’s return to YR and reunion with on-screen siblings Rey and Lola (Sasha Calle) reminded viewers that these three really do seem like a family. The fondness the actors have for one another spills over into their TV counterparts.
The show has plenty of happy couples right now — Rey/Sharon, Abby/Chance, and, off-screen Arturo/Mia — but, duos never stay content in daytime. Perhaps more frequent appearances by Arturo could help create some conflict? Canela showed us he can walk right back into his character as if no time had passed. Maybe we’ll get to see more of him in 2021. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
