Phyllis Summers has been involved with several businesses on The Young and the Restless including wellness retreats (NVP) and, most recently, The Grand Phoenix hotel. Off-screen, Phyllis’s portrayer, Michelle Stafford has her own successful skin care line, Skin Nation, which began on deep personal level.
Michelle Stafford set out to learn about what goes into people’s bodies and their health after her sister Janine was diagnosed with cancer years ago. “I did it mainly with food,” she tells Soap Hub. “I found it all to be fascinating.” Motivated by both wanting to help her sister and also having a friend with a successful online business selling organic cream, Stafford got an idea to help educate woman about what they were using for skin care.
“Once you put on a lotion, it goes right into your system and can play havoc with your hormones,” the actress says. “Your skin is your largest organ and you’re putting things right into your blood stream [through your skin].”
Stafford takes a multi-level approach to skincare along with her products, which can be seen here. “Even if it doesn’t change your skin overnight, at least you’re doing something good for your body,” she points out. “I started with coconut oil and it turned into [what I have now]. I learned that women want to [use] things that are natural…at the same time, it’s important to get rid of wrinkles and dark circles. You want to use a product that’s also safe.”
Michelle Stafford, who began her run as Phyllis in 1994, says she’s deeply concerned with her clients and has been known to pick up the phone and directly reach out to customers who have concerns and questions. “They were shocked Michelle Stafford was calling them,” says Stafford with a slight chuckle. “I’d ask them about their diet and environment. A lot of times, women had no idea smoking or having coffee all day was bad for their skin.”
Stafford wants folks to know she’s only interested in sharing information — not lecturing. “I always tell me I’m not the moral police,” she notes. “I don’t care what anyone else does with their body but don’t expect your body to glow when you’re smoking a lot.”
The actress/entrepreneur suggests drinking a lot of water and green foods to improve one’s skin. “Eat anything green — except green jelly beans,” she jokes. Stafford points out that her products are for men, too. “It’s unisex,” she says. “Men love it! My basic customer is in their late 40s, 50s, and 60s. That’s the main person buying my skin care.” Michelle Stafford is offering Soap Hub readers a special discount code (20% off), which can be used on at Skin Nation. Apply SOAPHUB20 when checking out.
