Over the weekend, the world learned the heartbreaking news of icon Nichelle Nichols’s death. The Young and the Restless alum Loren Lott shared a special connection with the Star Trek actress and fellow Genoa City graduate.
Lott recently portrayed a younger version of the actress’s character, Ominara, in Star Trek Renegades Ominara. The former Ana Winters actress took to Instagram to share her memories of Nichols alongside several videos and photos of them together in costume. “So honored that I got to play a young #NichelleNichols!” Lott captioned her post. “I have so much to post, so many cool #StarTrek moments. I’ll have to add things to my story later!
“But I’ll start with the day we met. I was doing fight choreography and didn’t expect to meet her. She literally stepped outside to watch and hype me. I remember thinking, ‘I wish I had known so I could have looked more presentable lol.’ Even with dementia, she gave me a tour of her house and was the sweetest! She remembered where everything was and was excited to show me her world, which included gifts from Martin Luther King, presidents, fans, and awards from NASA, just to name a few! MLK literally begged her to stay on the show when she wanted to quit because she was good representation for his family, and they loved her.
“Did you know she was also the first interracial kiss on tv!” Lott wondered. “For me, I actually knew her as Cuba Gooding Jr’s mom is Snow Dogs lol. I’m so grateful for our time while filming the pilot of #StarTrekRenegadesOminara! Just want to thank our producer Frank for being so good to her and introducing us. He spent SO much time with her and loved her! I’m so sorry to him and Ms. Nichol’s son and team! They loved her dearly and were always so loving. Rip Ms. Nichelle Nichols. Live long and prosper, queen 🖖🏾💜 ~ young Ominara #ripnichellenichols #iconic #blackexce.”
Y&R fans may remember that Nichelle Nichols played the role of Lucinda, Neil Winters’s (Kristoff St. John) mother. Lucinda and Neil had the chance to reunite before her death in a series of heartfelt scenes.
