Sharon Newman on The Young and the Restless is a character that frequently transitions from frontburner status to the “talk to” character. That is, the person people turn to when they need to unload the details of their messy lives. We guess it comes with the territory. After all, she owns a local GC coffee shop and has a psychology degree. But there’s so much more to Sharon, and we’d love to see her front and center of big drama…once again.
During the second half of 2023, Y&R did a nice job of adding even more depth to Sharon (Sharon Case — who talks Nick and Sharon here). After stabbing and killing Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby), she discovered she inherited the company that he left behind.
Cameron’s death propelled Sharon on this journey to find herself. She started a casual relationship with Chance (Conner Floyd), and she ended the same relationship. She wanted Chance to have a shot at finding a serious connection. And she wanted to concentrate on herself, on her business.
It was super cool to see her realize things about herself. She appeared more confident as she made deals, and learned how to run a corporation. What’s more, she knew what she wanted and if something didn’t work for her, then she pivoted. It all culminated in early 2024 when she had a dream episode and launched Cassidy First Technology at a huge party where she was the focus.
This all seemed like a renaissance for Sharon, leading to more stories. And then…nothing. So where is she? Recently, she popped up in Claire’s dream episode. In the dream, she and Nick (Joshua Morrow) were a couple, which was interesting. Was that a taste of the future?
Sharon’s a dynamic character played by a dynamic Daytime Emmy-winning actress. So, we’d love to see her continue on her path of discovery. Even though there are a ton of business arcs currently in the mix on Y&R, we’d also love to see what’s going on with her company. At this point, we’d love to see her do anything!
Give her another fierce friendship like the one she had with Drucilla (Victoria Rowell) back in the day. Let them get into fun, dramatic, and even angsty adventures. Not everything has to be about running a company or falling in love.
However, fans of the show love Sharon when she’s in love and dealing with all the highs and lows that come with that. And she has almost always had incredible chemistry with the men in her life. So, if they don’t reunite her with past love interests like Nick or Adam (Mark Grossman), then find a situationship that’s exciting and unexpected. And, no, it doesn’t have to be the main focus of her story.
When an integral character like Sharon disappears, we wonder why. Because her absence is felt. Next week, she surfaces to help Jack (Peter Bergman) with a crisis. Let’s hope this means we’ll see more and more of the character. And not just supporting somebody else’s story. That she’ll jumpstart her next exciting arc.
