Matt Clark had no issues coming face-to-face with Nick Newman. However, his onscreen portrayer, Roger Howarth, admitted that he’s “socially anxious.”

The Young and the Restless brought back one of the worst villains in history. Roger Howarth made his debut as Matt Clark, who has undergone many aliases and faces. This time, he goes by the name Mitch Bacall. His return rattled Sharon and Nick Newman. But in real life, Howarth was the one who was tongue-tied around Joshua Morrow.

Key Takeaways

  • Neither Nick nor Sharon is happy about Matt Clark’s return, and understandably so.
  • Howarth crossed paths with Morrow years ago.
  • It was awkward because he was starstruck and “socially anxious.”

A History Of Evil

Howarth has a history of playing villains on daytime television. He played the notorious rapist Todd Manning on One Life to Live. Then, he portrayed Franco Baldwin on General Hospital.

His most recent role is Matt Clark, who taunted Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) over 20 years ago. Some Y&R viewers would say that his character surpassed Ian Ward (Ray Wise) in terms of evil.

Howarth is good at playing evil. But in real life, he’s quite shy. In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Howarth recalled a time when he ran into Morrow before the actors were reintroduced on the set.

Their interaction took place in 2013, when Howarth was working on GH. As he walked along the sidewalk, he noticed Morrow eating breakfast. Howarth knew he had to say hi to him, but he got tongue-tied.

“I said, Oh my God, you’re on that show,'” Howarth explained. “I said hi, he said hi back, and you know, I’m socially awkward, and so that was the end of that conversation.”

Made An Impression

Matt Clark sure made an impression on Sharon when she ran into him. The same goes for Morrow, who can recognize a face. When they met again, Morrow reminded him of the time of their awkward run-in.

“I thought that was really sweet, you know? He’s a really good dude,” Howarth exclaimed. Their friendliness had to be pushed aside once the cameras started rolling. Mitch has been at the center of questioning by Nick and Sharon.

Howarth made his debut on the Friday, October 31, episode of Y&R. Sharon recognized him as the man who tried to break up her relationship with Nick. But now, he has a new moniker, Mitch. He acted like he didn’t know who Sharon was.

Then, on the Wednesday, November 5 episode, Nick had to meet the man himself. Their interaction ended with a punch. While neither Sharon nor Nick is happy about Matt coming back from the dead, Case and Morrow were nothing but welcoming, Howarth said.
