The Slap Heard Around the World

It was a moment that Y&R fans didn’t see coming. Diane (Susan Walters) lost her cool and slapped Jack (Peter Bergman) across the face. In her exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest, Walters explained why she supported her alter ego’s decision.

“I read that one time that women mostly fight with their words,” Walter said. “So when they have nothing else, they can say, when it’s such a big feeling, they can’t say anything, that’s when they hit.”

That doesn’t mean that Walters condones violence. She just could tell that Diane was so hurt and humiliated to find Jack in bed with Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Billy (Jason Thompson). On top of that, he was there with Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk, who keeps Y&R’s Peter Bergman on his toes).

“[I thought] it was awesome that they had Diane slap him, because there was nothing she could say in that moment,” Walters noted.

Time for Jack and Diane Angst

Jack and Diane’s marriage has been rock solid up to this point. Walters admitted she wasn’t afraid of them being written off the show because they were too drama-free. She had a feeling that something was brewing.

“All last year, when Jack and Diane were happy, I wasn’t like, ‘Oh no, we’re happy on a soap, that’s bad,'” Walters shared.

Though their marriage seems perfect, it’s far from it. Diane still doesn’t forgive Jack for risking his sobriety to help his ex-wife, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), get back on her sober journey in May 2024. This led to her explosive reaction to seeing Jack in bed with Patty, of all women.

“Like, Jack with Patty wasn’t just out of the blue — ‘He would never, because he’s got perfect boundaries with women!’ Because he’s clearly demonstrated that he doesn’t!” Walters argued.

Even though the soap actress noted that Diane feels heartbroken, she still hopes the couple can reconcile. Despite Jack’s past, Diane’s is worse, and Walters is aware of that. Because of this, she has to learn how to forgive him.
