On the Thursday, April 18 episode of The Young and the Restless, Chelsea and Adam clashed yet again over Connor’s diagnosis and the help he needs. Adam and Chelsea aren’t the only ones shocked by the suddenness of Connor’s diagnosis. We can’t quite make heads or tails of it ourselves.
It feels like he went from a young teen to a mentally ill and needing residential care in the blink of an eye. Maybe that’s because the bulk of his alleged deterioration happened off-screen. Like his parents, we didn’t see it happen, we were just presented with a situation we were told had become intolerable and a solution that needed to be implemented immediately. But what if something much more sinister is going on?
Behind the Scenes
Because Connor (Judah Mackey, who gave this BTS) picked the school he wanted to go to, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) and Adam (Mark Grossman) did no research of their own on the place. Their son wanted something, ergo their son should get it. He knew what was best for him. He couldn’t possibly be wrong or acting impulsively.
So off Connor went to the boarding school he’d selected, and for months it seemed like everything was hunky-dory. Until the school called to tell Chelsea and Adam that their son was mentally ill and needed to be moved to another, presumably more expensive school. Chelsea agreed instantly. Adam wanted to take a more cautious approach. At this point, Chelsea and Billy (Jason Thompson) roasted him for only thinking about himself, not Connor. Obviously, Connor knows what’s best for him. Look at how great all the choices he’s made so far have worked out!
Sinister Motives
But what if the school Connor picked out for himself is just one big con, created specifically to milk gullible, guilty parents like Chelsea and Adam — who also have very, very deep pockets? What if this school supposedly dedicated to helping children with emotional problems, actually schemes to make them worse, so they’ll need to transfer to an even more pricey institution — which they also coincidentally own?
Easy Pickings
Connor must have seemed like a dream come true when he first arrived. A kid who makes his parents do whatever he wants. A kid who makes demands and throws tantrums if he doesn’t get his way. A kid who has convinced his parents their job in life is to make him happy every minute of every day. A kid whose parents LOVE to blame the other for their child’s issues, which means they’ll never get together to compare notes or form a united front. All the school had to do was convince Connor that his perfectly normal, adolescent issues were a crisis.
Do you worry about things that might happen, Connor? That is something that no other teen ever, ever does. Do you sometimes lack confidence? That is a state unique to you. Do you have scary thoughts and obsesses about them? You are the only person this ever happened to. Quick, call your parents and tell them to send money to fix the problem!
Dumb and Dumber
Fooling a self-centered kid who already believes there is no one else on Earth like him is easy. Fooling supposedly more reasonable adults should be harder. But not when it’s Adam and Chelsea! All the school had to do was throw some buzzwords at them, confuse them thoroughly, and — this is the most important part — convince them that Connor’s problems were all their fault and if they didn’t do EXACTLY as the school recommends the poor chap might actually have a moment of discomfort and self-doubt, and the already bickering couple were back at each other’s throats.
They were so busy arguing about who is worse for Connor that they never stopped and asked if someone else might be at fault. School = 2, Adam and Chelsea = 0. We expect Connor to continue to be ill for…well, for as long as Adam keeps paying those bills. (We doubt Chelsea is contributing a penny. Not only does she want Adam to sign off on something he doesn’t believe is in his son’s best interests, but she expects him to pay for it, too!)
Of course, this likely isn’t truly what’s going on, but it would have helped this storyline for more of it to take place on screen. Of course, this IS a soap, so a twist like this would be pretty soapy. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
