As Nikki’s descent into the darkest realms of alcoholism continued on The Young and the Restless, Jack tried to help her by making a daring decision. Peter Bergman got candid about Jack’s motivation, and why he did what he did.
Going all the way back to January, Jack (Peter Bergman) has been trying to help Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) overcome her alcoholism after she was the victim of the evil Jordan (Colleen Zenk). Jordan captured Nikki and had her hooked up to an IV full of vodka. The May 2 episode centered only around the two characters, almost like a play. Jack tried his best to draw out Nikki’s inner strength to no avail, so he switched tactics. Not only did he start drinking her vodka, but he also ordered some pills from his dealer. In what could be an Emmy-winning performance, he sacrificed his own sobriety to save hers. Jack’s move may have been enough to slap some sense into her and get her back on the wagon.
Bergman spoke to Michael Fairman TV about the episode that everyone’s been talking about lately. He delved into Jack’s rationale, considering he’s also an addict in recovery. He stated that the story was incredible, adding, “As it was presented to me, it was the story of Jack going too far to help Nikki. When I got the script and saw that it was one of those great, ‘the tables turn,’ suddenly you’re on the receiving end.” He remarked that stories like this on soaps often take several days to progress. However, “In one episode, this giant shift happens,” Bergman said.
He further remarked, “Jack kept appealing to the goodness in her. It was covered by all of this addiction and alcohol. And the best way he could find her kindness, her goodness, was by putting himself in jeopardy and watching her come alive.” And certainly, by the end of the episode, it seemed that Nikki was scared straight when he fell unconscious.
Bergman noted that when Jack was out of options in trying to get Nikki to either go to rehab or seek some other kind of help. Jack felt he had no recourse but to take drastic measures. “He knew what he was starting, and then it went too far. Jack knew he wanted to shock her into sobriety, shock her into clarity, and he went too far, and he’s going to pay for it,” he boldly stated.
Although Jack can be volatile and rub people (and fans) the wrong way sometimes, this selfless act has presented the character in a new light. However, the ripple effect could have devastating consequences for his marriage to Diane (Susan Walters). But, they’re pretty solid as soap couples go. Perhaps Diane will see her husband for the hero he is and stand by his side through his inevitable recovery.
