Flashback Friday: Y&R’s Tracey Bregman on Lauren Apologizing to Traci

Fans of Young and the Restless were treated to a flashback-filled episode featuring Daytime Emmy-winner Tracey Bregman and her iconic character Lauren Fenmore. The episode admirably covered Lauren’s lengthy history, but not everything could be recounted in one hour. Bregman talked to Soap Hub for Flashback Friday about a scene fans remember fondly.

Tracey Bregman — Lauren Learns a Lesson

The year was 2008, and Traci (Beth Maitland) and Lauren encountered one another at a reception at the Genoa City Athletic Club following Katherine Chancellor’s (Jeanne Cooper) memorial. (It was really Katherine’s doppelganger Marge, who died, but everyone thought it was Katherine who had perished.)

While Lauren’s “mean girl” days with Traci were long over, Lauren felt she still needed to apologize to her. Lauren showed a photo of Fenmore to Traci on her phone, prompting Traci to say off-handedly that this was the most pleasant conversation they had. The Abbott heiress wasn’t trying to make a dig, but Lauren took the moment as an opportunity to say that she was sorry.

Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Y&R Word

“You’ve never said or done anything wrong in your entire life,” Lauren told Traci after she said she didn’t mean to imply anything by her comment. “I can’t believe how cruelly I treated you when we were kids. I saw that movie ‘Mean Girls,’ and it had me written all over it.” Lauren added that she meant to reach out to Traci, but…she didn’t.

Ever-gracious Traci pointed out that everyone has things in their past that they regret. “I like to think that I’m a better person now, but until I looked you in the eye and really apologized, I knew that couldn’t be wasn’t going to be true,” Lauren added.

Tracey Bregman Looks to Lauren’s Future

“Fans mention that scene to me all the time,” Bregman said. “Just when you think they don’t watch every day! That was the first time Lauren said [to Traci] she had to apologize. People took that to heart. That was nice.”

As Y&R continues its 50th-anniversary celebration, Bregman would like to see more Lauren/Traci moments. “I’m hopeful that Beth and I will have more scenes together,” the actress noted. Does she think that the kind of harassment Lauren inflicted on Traci could occur in today’s world? “No,” Bregman responded. “I don’t think [someone today] could say half of what [Lauren] said. There are mean girls, and then, there are mean girls!”
