The current storylines on The Young and the Restless involve Victor’s continued rivalry with Jack. The return of Sharon and Nick’s nemesis, Matt Clark. And Cane Ashby versus Genoa City’s corporate establishment. But fans are saying they want something more. Soaps like General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful have successfully ushered in the next generation of characters. That’s what they want for Y&R, too.

Key Takeaways

  • Most of the storylines on Y&R focus on the veterans.
  • Y&R fans want to see a new generation of young adults causing trouble in Genoa City.
  • Blending younger characters and strong teen stories alongside the veteran stories would successfully energize the canvas.

Ushering In The Next Generation

On one soap opera message board, a fan proposed the idea of Y&R shifting its focus to a “new young and the restless generation.” They want storylines focused on Victoria’s (Amelia Heinle) and Lily’s (Christel Khalil) kids. That same fan also would love to see the return of Fenmore (Zach Tinker), Lucy (Lily Brooks O’Briant), and Christian (Alex Wilson).

“I say this because the show feels old. Definitely not young and the restless,” the user noted. They want fresh and vibrant storylines that include the younger generation, much like the other soaps have successfully done.

“The show needs some fun and youthful energy! Some joy!” the original poster continued. “Some young romance! Some new writers who can write for characters under 30 who aren’t handed a business mogul job that instantly ages them 20 years.”

Y&R Fans Get Into a Heavy Debate

This turned into a heavy debate in the thread. One person argued, “I like the cast the way it is. I actually like the vets much better than the 20s and 30s group. Victor, Nikki, Nick, Sharon, Victoria, Phyllis, those are the people I want to see.”

Someone else wondered who would become the supervillains of the younger generation. “Who will be the Camerons and the Mitchs to come back? There is no youthful drama!”

Another person agreed, “We need more teens. More teen and young adult stories. We need people who are middle class as well, not just uber wealthy.”

Meanwhile, someone else noted, “IMO, Y&R does not shine when it comes to storylines for younger people. I’m a longtime watcher of GH, and they blend older and younger characters quite successfully. They also hire outstanding young actors.”

Other soaps could learn from General Hospital’s thriving teen scene. Their younger stars have become the focal point of the soap. Other soaps should take a page from the Emmy-award-winning soap. Fans are enjoying these youthful storylines play out.
