Mal Young’s Farewell Letter To The Young and the Restless

Mal Young, the former executive producer/head writer of The Young and the Restless, is already back in England, but before he left the United States — and Genoa City — he wrote a letter to the cast, production staff, and crew, detailing the reasons for his departure.

Young shared that note with Soap Hub on Tuesday. It reads:

“After writing and producing over 400 hours of television and 3 hugely enjoyable years, it is with heavy heart and after much thoughtful consideration, that I bid farewell to Genoa City.

“I did all that I came to do, but it’s now time for a new challenge – running an all-year round drama series is all-consuming and I’d like to get some of my life back, not least of which to spend time with my family.

“Additionally, with the current global explosion of scripted drama, it’s time to be thinking of new adventures and I have some projects of my own that I’d now like to put my energy into.

“We’ve had a blast and you helped me achieve amazing things in the writing and production values, of which I’m most proud. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm.”

Young joined Y&R back in 2016, first as a producer. Last year, he took over head writing duties after Sally Sussman Morina left her position as Y&R’s top scribe.

As executive producer and head writer, Young’s major stories included J.T.’s (Thad Luckinbill) emotional and physical abuse of Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and the subsequent mystery of his death.

He also penned Jack’s (Peter Bergman) paternity puzzle, which turned out to be orchestrated by Ashley (Eileen Davidson), the untimely death of Hilary (Mishael Morgan) and her unborn baby, and Nick (Joshua Morrow) standing up to his father Victor (Eric Braeden) by creating his own company, Dark Horse.

The scribe also brought to the screen the Rosales family. First, Arturo (Jason Canela) arrived on the scene as Arturo, a contractor who had a fling with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott).

Then, Jordi Vilasuso made the scene as lawman Rey, who’s involved with Sharon (Sharon Case), followed by Sasha Calle as Lola, who’s been paired onscreen with Kyle (Michael Mealor). More recently, Noemi Gonzalez arrived in town as Rey’s estranged wife Mia.

The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
