Doesn’t it feel like The Young and the Restless went out of their way to undercut any potential suspense in their story about Chance’s presumed death, Abby’s hunt for him, their reunion, and his sense of obligation to the comrades he left behind?
It wasn’t just the constant showing of the new Chance (Conner Floyd) in the next day’s previews. It wasn’t just the man of the hour himself showing up not at the end of a cliff-hanger episode but smack in the middle.
Our big issue is that after multiple episodes of Chance imploring Abby (Melissa Ordway) to understand why she couldn’t tell anyone about him still being alive and after his wife pouted and whined and showed him a couple of baby videos, Chance changed his mind seemingly on a dime.
Sure, go ahead and tell Ashley (Eileen Davidson). Sure, go ahead and let Ashley tell Jack (Peter Bergman). Now let’s call my mom and dad in Australia, and pack your bags, we’re coming home – mission aborted!
What an anticlimax! Imagine, instead, Chance bringing Abby around to his way of thinking. Yes, he should finish what he started. He’s a man of honor and she can’t ask him to go back on his principles. But – and here’s the kicker – Abby is never losing him again. She’s going with him!
Now, we’ve got a classic, soap opera love on the run story, as Chance and Abby have to stay ahead of his enemies, the U.S. government, and their very politically connected families. It’s you and me against the world. It’s dangerous. It’s sexy. It’s interesting.
Meanwhile, every day that Abby fails to come home on The Young and the Restless, Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) and Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) are growing more and more attached to Dominic. Devon because the boy is biologically his, and Amanda because she knows what it’s like to be abandoned.
But Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) is left wondering why. Dominic is going to be bonding with some woman who isn’t his biological mother, that woman isn’t the one who carried him for nine months. Now we’ve got a story! Except…sadly…we don’t.
