On The Young and the Restless, Victor Newman vowed to bring down Billy Abbott. Sorry, he vowed to bring down Billy’s competing media company. This was nothing personal. It was never personal. Victor isn’t that kind of petty guy.
In order to do so, he and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) broke multiple laws – and promises. Did they go too far? What viewers of the show think:
That was ridiculous, 42% of the audience fumed. The way you win in business is by being better than the other guy. If Victor truly thought Adam was capable of leading Newman Media to best Chance Comm, he wouldn’t have needed to resort to dirty tricks.
It makes Victor (Eric Braeden) look small and pathetic. And it should make Adam wonder whether Daddy really has the faith in him he claims. And you know how Adam gets when he thinks Victor isn’t appreciating him the way he appreciates his other children.
Yeah, Victor and Adam went too far, 34% of you shrug, but this is how they do business in Genoa City. Billy (Jason Thompson) will probably go too far next time, and then they’ll be even.
Of course, since Victor always needs to win, he will then get – totally professional – revenge. And this will go on until the next time Billy and Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) get back together. It’s not so much too far as it is the road much traveled.
Is there another way to operate in soapland 24% of you wonder? Do we really want to watch boring scenes after boring scenes of ruthless businessmen writing checks and filling out documents and hiring more staff? No! We want to watch them lie and cheat and blackmail and scheme. It’s not real-world business, but it is what we watch soap operas for. So keep it coming!
