There is no nice way to put this: Nate Hastings needs to get over himself on The Young and the Restless. His business decisions have been terrible, and he refuses to listen to anyone who might want to help him make better ones. It seems that he is in for one major comeuppance. But what if he has a good reason for being so defensive…and so arrogant?
It might seem like Nate (Sean Dominic) assumes that his experience as a top-notch surgeon should be easily transferable to the Executive Suite. They do say that God has a Surgeon Complex (this means surgeons are really, really full of themselves), and Nate’s behavior certainly suggests he’s buying into his own infallibility.
It also might seem like, after seeing Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow), Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor), and Summer Newman Abbott (Allison Lanier) get handed major corporate titles just because they were born into the right family, Nate assumed he was equally as (un)deserving.
But what if the real reason Nate has been acting so high and mighty is that he’s actually terrified? Think about it: Nate lost his surgical career in an instant — thanks to Devon Hamilton (Bryton James), no less.
Devon punched out Nate, who fell, severed a nerve in his hand, and lost the career he’d been training his entire life for. Being a practicing physician without being able to operate wasn’t enough for him. He felt like he’d been left to flounder. He felt completely out of control.
And what better way to regain control than by switching to a completely new field — and acting like you knew everything about it? Nate is trying to keep what little control he still has over his life — especially in the face of Devon’s, of all people, pushback.
