Lily Winters broke up with Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless. Billy got all teary-eyed and went running to Chelsea Lawson, where they agreed that Lily just didn’t understand. Billy and Chelsea are deep, tortured souls who have been through things in their lives that filled their hearts with darkness.
Princess Lily has just led too charmed of existence to be a fair match for hurting heroes like them. Oh, how lucky she is, never to have suffered as Billy and Chelsea have suffered. Uhm…what? We’re talking about Lily Winters Ashby, here?
We’re talking about the Lily (Christel Khalil) who was statutorily raped by Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart)? The one who watched her mom die by going over a cliff? The one who watched her husband “die” right in front of her? (Sure, he came back from the dead, but so does most everyone in Genoa City, eventually.) The one who survived cancer which left her unable to carry her own children? The one who then lost her dad, too?
But we are also talking about the Lily who accidentally killed her brother’s wife and unborn child, and then WENT TO PRISON for it. How many soap-opera characters ever pay for their multitudes of crimes by actually serving time? Usually, their emotional turmoil is considered an adequate punishment, and everyone just shrugs and moves on as if the debt has been settled.
Lily literally spent more time behind bars than Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), and we know everything he’s done! Then, instead of feeling sorry for herself, Lily actually decided to take what she learned in prison and turn it into helping ex-cons get their life back together.
But, ultimately, that was Lily’s gravest error. When terrible things happened to her, she didn’t let them get her down. She didn’t whine, she didn’t complain, and she didn’t beg for sympathy. So idiots like Billy (Jason Thompson) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) assume that she couldn’t possibly understand what it’s like to suffer – like they do. And thus feel justified in treating her like crap. You know Lily – nothing bugs her!
