We thought we were long past the era of thinking every child needs a mother and a father together under the same roof for them to grow up not-warped, yet The Young and the Restless can’t seem to think of any reason for Abby Newman and Devon Hamilton to be together other than that they have a son together.

Abby Newman And Devon Hamilton: To the Wall

Sure, we’re supposed to think there’s this undeniable chemistry between them. But no matter how many times they have sex on the floor, against the wall, on the stairs, even in a bed, we just don’t see it. Sure, Abby (Melissa Ordway) listens to Devon (Bryton James). She supports him. Those are both nice things. But are they enough to hinge a relationship on?

Young and the Restless Trauma Drama

In real life? Absolutely, yes. But in the soap world…where’s the conflict? Abby seems totally over soon-to-be ex-husband Chance (Conner Floyd). And he can make some waves about Dominic’s custody, but that will just be an annoyance, not an actual conflict.

Abby’s siblings have to deal with Victor (Eric Braeden) sticking his nose into their love lives. But Victor barely remembers Abby exists most days. She’s free to do what she likes, both personally and professionally.

Y&R Conflict of Interest

Sure, there might be a tiny bit of something if Devon ends up taking over running the company that Victor has decided he wants to buy for Adam (Mark Grossman). Abby might end up in the middle. But doesn’t it feel more like she’ll be to the side?

For the life of us, we just can’t seem to figure out where the story is here, besides Devon needing someone to talk to about Lily (Christel Khalil), Jill (Jess Walton), and Tucker (Trevor St. John). The initial affair was a way to get Amanda (Mishael Morgan) out of town. But as Buffy the Vampire Slayer once sang, “Where do we go from here?”
