What Is Right About Chance and Abby’s Young and the Restless Story

On The Young and the Restless, the baby drama between Abby Newman Chancellor, Chance Chancellor, and Devon Hamilton hasn’t exactly earned kudos from viewers. Devon (Bryton James) signed a contract, he has no right to ask for legal access to Dominic, say some. Abby is being unreasonable, counter others. This is so boring, both sides bury their heads in their heads.

Young and the Restless: What Works

And while we agree that not every story beat has been a winner, there is one aspect of the narrative that we’d like to give a special shout-out to.

Not the Same Old, Same Old

We all know that, on a soap opera, a happy couple is a couple living happily on the back-burner. And that doesn’t make actors – or their fans – very happy. So there would bound to be trouble in Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Chance’s (Conner Floyd) paradise sooner rather than later.

At least, this time, it wasn’t the ad nauseam cliche on Young and the Restless. Chance cheats on Abby. Abby cheats on Chance. Abby whines that Chance is working too much and not spending enough time with her. Chance is pissed that the Newmans are trying to control him. We all know these stories. We’ve all seen these stories. Thousands of times.

No Villains

Chance and Abby disagreeing over what’s best for the baby they both love is realistic… and surprisingly original for a soap opera. No one is the bad guy here. No one is obviously in the wrong. Considering how many children are born dramatically on soaps, it’s amazing how little drama actually comes from parenting them. (They’re usually “upstairs.”) Couples fight over values and ambitions. And many of them traditionally involve children.

So kudos to Y&R for showcasing a young couple navigating the challenges of parenthood. We may not have loved the execution, but the idea is one worth revisiting.
