Was it supposed to be a The Young and the Restless spoiler when Nate dramatically (and illegally) delivered the not at all surprising news that Amanda shared a blood type with the late Hilary?
Ooooh… they’re both type B-Negative. Only 3% of the population has that! This must mean that they’re related! Wouldn’t the fact that they look identical have been a bigger clue?
The Young and the Restless: Changing Lanes
When Nate (Sean Dominic) first dropped his alleged bombshell, Amanda (Mishael Morgan) shrugged it off. He suggested investigating, but Amanda wasn’t interested. Then he kept talking, the episode was almost over, and Amanda allowed herself to be convinced. Yeah, sure, fine, she’ll do a DNA test, whatevs.
Seeking Selfhood
So where are they supposed to get the second sample to compare Amanda’s? Devon (Bryton James) is the obvious choice. Amanda was sarcastic about him having some of his dead wife’s DNA lying around but, considering how obsessively he held onto everything, it’s entirely likely that Devon still has an old hairbrush lying around, maybe even a toothbrush. Heck, he might even have the bloody clothes the hospital cut off of her after the accident.
So What?
So they’ll run the test, they’ll get the results (the results will hopefully not be switched, soap opera-style) and we’ll have the truth. Amanda is Hilary’s long-lost twin sister! Amanda is Hilary’s long-lost younger sister! Amanda is Hilary’s long-lost half-sister! She’s her cousin! She’s her niece! She’s her aunt!
So what? No. Really. So what? Hilary is dead. So is her mother. There’s no big family reunion to be had. And if the big issue is that Devon will start feeling drawn to Amanda because she’s related to his beloved Hilary… wouldn’t that have already happened when she looked just like his beloved Hilary? Just where is the drama supposed to be in this story? The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
