On The Young and the Restless, Phyllis Summers has been painted into a corner, and it’s difficult to see how she will emerge from this current situation. It seems that the CBS soap has a Phyllis problem.
It seemed like things were going well for Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). She and the supposed love of her life were slowly finding their way back to each other. Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) confessed his lasting love for her, and although they took it slow, their connection felt strong and secure.
Of course, then Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) returned, and Phyllis somewhat predictably lost it. Sure, she’d had a while to mature and move on, but Phyllis also thought Diane was dead, so her suddenly being alive was a pretty big problem.
We know that Phyllis made a mistake when she shoved Diane’s face in her and Jack’s romantic hook-up, but we’re surprised that Jack reacted so poorly when it seems pretty clear that Phyllis actually wanted to be with him even without Diane. He’s all but condemned her to never changing by constantly pointing out to anyone who will listen (or maybe just Kyle Abbott [Michael Mealor] and her) that she always reverts to type. Still, it’s surprising coming from a man who supposedly loves her deeply.
Now, Phyllis is facing a possible professional issue too since Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) wants to start a rival hotel or perhaps even buy Phyllis out of The Grand Phoenix to make a grander Phoenix. If she doesn’t have the hotel, then what does Phyllis have left?
Certainly, it doesn’t seem as if she and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) have any possible future together, and while she does have Summer Newman Abbott (Allison Lanier), Phyllis clearly sees that Summer is committed to Kyle, which means Diane is firmly in her life. Perhaps all that’s left is for Phyllis to spiral out of control and try to take Diane down, but is that sustainable?
Actress Michelle Stafford recently posted to Instagram with some advice that might help her on-screen alter ego as Phyllis finds herself looking at what seems to be a bleak future. “‘There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.’ CS Lewis” read the caption. Do you think Phyllis could take this to heart? What do you think is coming up for her in the near future? Let us know in the comments below.
