The Young and the Restless viewers know that Mamie Johnson raised the Abbott children and even briefly had a thing for her employer, John Abbott. She also had her own family, including her nieces, Dru and Olivia. For her performance, Soap Hub Performer of the Week honors for Y&R is presented to Mamie’s portrayer, Veronica Redd.
Veronica Redd: Y&R Performer of the Week
Mamie hasn’t been back to Genoa City in years because she’s traveling the world using Jill’s (Jess Walton) money. Redd stepped right back into the role with ease. She interacted beautifully with Jack (Peter Bergman), Billy (Jason Thompson), Traci (Beth Maitland), and Ashley (Eileen Davidson).
Each interaction she had showcased what a wonderful actress Redd is as she struck just the right balance of maternal emotions and old friend. Her facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice brought beautiful life to the words she said to her former charges.
We especially enjoyed the moment when Mamie ran across Jill. Although Jill hoped to let bygones be bygones, Mamie wasn’t about to hear of it. We appreciated her firm but still kind behavior during the scene. We could tell Mamie hadn’t forgiven Jill, but she wasn’t vindictive about it, necessarily.
Sadly, during Mamie’s interaction with Ashley, she didn’t get to complete her thought, but we’d love to see Mamie talk some sense into Jack. Of course, given that she’d already kindly told him that love was all that mattered, we’re not so sure it wouldn’t have been Ashley who received the stern but loving talking to.
Veronica Redd also brought some comedic moments through excellent timing when she talked to Billy about Jill and when she commented that the Abbott mansion hadn’t been updated…at all. Her shock at seeing the formerly dead Diane (Susan Walters) was also quite believable.
Bravo on an excellent performance! We’d love to see more visits from Veronica Redd and Mamie. Who knows? Perhaps she’d settle down in Genoa City for her golden years.
