It’s been said that “no good deed goes unpunished.” That’s certainly how Mariah Copeland must have felt after acting as the surrogate mother to Abby and Chance’s child on The Young and the Restless. The red-haired mama brought happiness to a childless couple but went on an emotional roller coaster ride along the way. For her portrayal of a surrogate mom has bid farewell to her child, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for Y&R on Camryn Grimes, Mariah’s portrayer.

Camryn Grimes – Performer of the Week Y&R

Leading up to the christening of little Dominic Phillip Chancellor, Mariah recapped what she’d gone through leading up to giving birth. At first, she was hesitant to take on the role of godmother but now, Mariah feels that it’s just the right fit – she’ll have a part to play in the life of the child she carried. Grimes brought just enough “I’m trying to convince myself” to this scene to keep viewers tuned into how she was going to handle the baptism.

Y&R’s Camryn Grimes, a two-time Daytime Emmy-winner, didn’t have much dialogue during the ceremony but the expressions on Mariah’s face and her body language as the officiator spoke showed just how emotional she was feeling. While she appreciated being included in Dominic’s life, Mariah came to realize that being close to her son only accentuated the distance as Abby – not Mariah – would be the one raising the child she carried.

Unable to raise a glass in a toast to her son, Mariah bolted from the reception back at the Chancellor’s mansion unable to contain her emotions. “I can’t even be around the baby without my heart shattering into a million pieces,” Mariah vented to her girlfriend Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks).

Mariah returned to the reception and apologized. The guests assured the surrogate she had nothing over which to be sorry. After family and friends departed, Mariah reappeared and announced to Abby and Devon (Bryton James) that she, too, would be taking her leave – she and Tessa are moving out of the mansion. Abby insisted that Nothing had changed between her and Mariah, but Mariah softly informed her that while nothing had change for Abby things had for her.

Mariah’s Truth Comes Out

“Everything changed…I changed,” Mariah explained, holding back her tears. Abby insisted that she wanted to help Mariah through whatever she was enduring. “There is nothing you can do that’s going to make this easier for me,” Mariah said. She went on to explain that she didn’t want to hurt Abby but that she couldn’t pretend to stay so close to her son and pretend this wasn’t killing her.

“I know this is what we agreed to. I know this is how it’s supposed to be but I can not be here day in and day out because it hurts…it physically hurts because as crazy as this sounds, all I want to do is be his mother,” Mariah said as she tried to cope with her emotions.

Mariah had one final request before she left, which Abby generously agreed to. She wanted to hold the baby she carried one last time. “Hi, buddy,” Mariah said. “I have to say goodbye now. You and me, we’re always going to be connected. We’re always going to have a special bond like nobody else. I know that there’s going to come a time when I’m stronger and I’m a little more together and I can come over here and be a part of your life…I need to keep my distance for now…as much as it breaks my heart…so I can get to that place…I love you so…so much.”

Camryn Grimes came into the hearts of Y&R viewers when she was just a little girl as Mariah’s twin Cassie Newman. Now, fans of the show have come to love her even more given her powerful performance in this storyline. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
