The Young and the Restless’ Mariah Copeland recently took on a new job at Jabot, and she’s also been presented with another big opportunity. Chance and Abby invited her to act as their surrogate and help bring their baby into the world.
Camryn Grimes — Performer of the Week
But is Mariah up for the emotional impact this would have on her life? Two-time Daytime Emmy winner Camryn Grimes explored the many facets of this storyline as Mariah weighed the emotional and physical pros and cons of making this big commitment. Grimes’ thoughtful performance has earned her Performer of the Week honors for YR from Soap Hub.
One thing Grimes does so well as Mariah is fire off zingers to friends and foes alike, but as she absorbed the impact of being a surrogate, Grimes played her character as almost speechless. She mostly took her trademark comebacks off the table. Rather than have Mariah give a hasty “yes” to Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Chance (Donny Boaz), she took time to let their request fully sink in and reflect on what it would mean.
Grimes played Mariah’s stunned amazement that the newlyweds were asking her to go on this emotional journey with them that would necessitate her making a physical commitment, too. Mariah’s first instinct was to share this situation with her partner, Tessa (Cait Fairbanks), who provided a calm and rational counterpoint to Mariah’s understandable uncertainty.
Mariah shared out loud that this would be a commitment that would take nine months, involve holding off on eating sushi, drinking Cosmos, and not riding any rollercoasters! Tessa tried to get Mariah focused on her decision by asking her if this was something she truly wanted to do or not.
Next, Mariah shared with her mother, Sharon (Sharon Case), that she was considering getting pregnant and why. Having given birth to children herself, Sharon was in a better place to give her daughter some advice. She urged Mariah to take everything into account before she makes her final decision. “Don’t be so sure,” Sharon gently noted to Mariah after Mariah theorized giving up her baby after carrying it wouldn’t be a problem.
This prompted Mariah to seek out more information. She braved the snowy elements, returning to the Chancellor mansion to talk to Chance and Abby, who are anxious to start a family. Realizing that the Chancellors would make great parents and receiving support from Tessa that she would love her no matter what, a tearful Mariah agreed to become Chance and Abby’s surrogate.
Ironically, Grimes was a young girl when she came onto the YR canvas as Mariah’s twin Cassie. Now, the actress has grown up enough to carry a child of her own. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
