Is The Lack Of Middle-Class Characters Limiting Y&R Storylines?

Why does it feel like everyone on The Young and the Restless is rich? Yes, even the poor people. It’s not just that everyone has everything handed to them. We’ve kind of gotten used to trust-fund brats like Victoria Newman, Kyle Abbott, Summer Newman, Devon Hamilton, Billy Abbott, and Lily Winters posturing about how hard they’ve worked to achieve success in life.

Young and the Restless Lacking Financially Diverse Characters

It’s also folks like Nate Hastings, Chelsea Lawson, Chloe Mitchell Fisher, and Sally Spectra going from living simply to the high life in the span of a commercial break. So much drama gets lost in the process!

Y&R: Live and Let Live

Take the case of Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) and Nate’s (Sean Dominic) breakup. Elena can no longer stand the man Nate has become ever since he’s been installed in the Executive Suite (and she doesn’t even know about the insider trading yet!). So, Elena made the mature and responsible, not to mention self-respecting decision to move out…and into The Grand Phoenix.

Do you know how much a luxury hotel like that costs per night???? A lot more than a single doctor should be able to easily afford. Before moving in with Nate, Elena needed to share an apartment with Lola Rosales (Sasha Calle). And now she’s suddenly flush? Elena having nowhere to go could have added a wrinkle to the story. A realistic wrinkle.

Young and the Restless: In Custody

The same goes for Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan). Where is all her money coming from? What if she didn’t have the money to take care of Connor Newman (Judah Mackey), and Adam (Mark Grossman) used that to win full custody? Or what if Johnny Abbott (Paxton Mishkind) agreed to get to know his biological mom….but Chelsea couldn’t fete him in the manner which this Abbott/Newman had grown accustomed to? That would be real – and relatable – drama!
