How Young and the Restless Could Have A Classic Romeo & Juliet Story

With The Young and the Restless arrival of Allie…Nguyen? Volien? Abbott…the show has a golden opportunity to pair her up with the heretofore rootless Noah Newman. Picture it…Jack Abbott’s granddaughter…Victor Newman’s grandson…it could be a classic battle royale with two feuding families scheming to get between a pair of star-crossed lovers, in fair Genoa City, where we set our scene. Except, there’s a tiny problem.

Young and the Restless: Glory Days

Once upon a time, Victor (Eric Braeden) and Jack (Peter Bergman) were constantly at each other’s throats. They fought over their business interests. They fought over women like Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott).

Victor caused Jack’s sister to lose her mind. Jack was a better stepfather to Victor’s son, Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) than Victor had time to be. So Victor schemed with Jack’s surly son, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor). Jack retaliated by scheming with Victor’s son, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman).

Victor caused the death of Jack’s niece…then got her transplanted heart. Oh, and he hired a lookalike to take over Jack’s life while Victor had Jack kidnapped, slipped her into Jack’s wife’s bed, the trauma of which caused Phyllis Summers (then-Gina Tognoni) to eventually cheat on Jack with Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson). You know, just wholesome, manly pranks.

End of An Era

Yet, in spite of all that, Jack and Victor are now…buddies. They share drinks together. Talk over old times – not the kidnapping and rape part. Jack wonders if he was a good enough parent, and Victor urges him to not beat himself up over not being as great of a father as Victor.

With this kind of bonhomie, Noah (Rory Gibson) and Allie (Kelsey Wang) hooking up will probably prompt both granddads to chuckle about how funny life is. And that’s not what we soap watchers like to call…drama.
