On the Young and the Restless, it seems that Billy Abbott never learns. While he’s managed to mostly beat his gambling addiction, the younger Abbott, who’s suffered from Peter Pan syndrome his whole life, still can’t seem to stop making mistakes when it comes to his life.
Billy (Jason Thompson) made a shocking choice recently when he decided to give up his podcast — The Grinning Soul — to put his full focus on being Lily Winters’s (Christel Khalil) Chief Operating Officer at Chancellor-Winters. It truly feels like Billy is trying to do what he thinks he should do, even though Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) was right in saying that he’s not cut out for the corporate world.
Both Lily and Chelsea seem uneasy with Billy’s decision. Although Lily tried not to be too forceful with her concerns, Chelsea flat-out let him have it. Of course, Chelsea had her own ulterior motives, which probably made it more difficult for Billy to listen, since he knows that she had some selfish reasons for wanting him to keep going with the podcasts.
While he didn’t confide in Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), even she could sense that something was happening with Billy. He’s never been satisfied with life despite trying and failing over and over to follow in his father, John Abbott (Jerry Douglas) and brother Jack Abbott’s (Peter Bergman) footsteps in the business world.
We’re certain that Billy also wants to make his mom, Jill Foster Abbott Atkinson (Jess Walton), happy, but in the end, it looks like he’s making a bad choice — again. Billy, Billy, Billy, what is he doing? Why would you turn your back on the one thing recently that’s helped you feel alive and fulfilled? It could be that he feels some attraction to Chelsea, and that scared him, but it almost seems like he is using his choice as a last-ditch effort to hold onto Lily because they’ve drifted apart.
Ultimately, Billy choosing to abandon the podcasts in favor of being Lily’s COO appears to be yet another in a long line of poor choices. This time, though, it’s Billy pushing himself into being somebody else’s vision of himself instead of somebody else insisting he fit into their version of what they think he should be. Will that distinction make the outcome different this time? Time will tell.
