Are Y&R’s Adam Newman and Sally Spectra At A Dead End?

Why a reunion may not be in their Y&R interests.

For months now on The Young and the Restless, Adam Newman has been pining for Sally, and Sally has been telling him they are totes over, she’s in love with his brother, Nick, now. Except that it was Nick himself who suggested to Sally that she and Adam still had a lot of unfinished business. And Sally finally heard him. Is this what it will take for Sally and Adam to reunite? And, if that’s the case, is that really the right move for this couple?

Y&R: Can’t Live With Them, Can’t Live Without Them

We’re not saying that it would be the wrong move for Adam (Mark Grossman) and Sally (Courtney Hope) personally. They definitely appear to be the loves of each other’s lives — Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) and Bold and the Beautiful guys who? And even when they hurt each other — which they’ve done multiple times already — the connection they share is still there. They’ve bared their souls to each other. They’ve lost a daughter together. They are meant to be. But….

Adam Newman & Sally Spectra: Nothing To See Here

In some ways, they are almost too perfect for each other. They get each other on a fundamental level. They encourage each other (even when they probably shouldn’t). Once the artificial barriers to their being together are removed, there should be no conflict between them.

That’s great for a real-life couple. Not so great for a soap opera couple. For a soap opera couple to remain on the front burner, they need to have angst and drama. The more, the better. And every time that’s come up for Adam and Sally, it hasn’t felt organic. It felt forced, contrived, and insincere.

Young & Restless: Together We Stand

So how can they stay on the front burner if they have nothing to fight about? We can definitely see them forming a united front to take on the Newmans. But would a show ever actually let a reunited couple be happy for a while (without disappearing them into the magic wardrobe from Narnia)? We’re not sure Y&R has it in them.
