When it comes to Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.
Cards on the table, I quite liked this week’s Young and the Restless – even though nothing especially noteworthy occurred…unless you count Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) deciding to return to Newman Enterprises noteworthy…and I don’t. That’s just an example of a character’s throughline being disregarded, I can do without that, think you very much.
What was on offer was mostly setup for several potentially juicy stories – will Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) succumb to temptation, will Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) be ‘Billy’s’ final undoing, will there be a repeat of Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) and Abby Many Last Names’ (Melissa Ordway) hotel wars, and will Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) give in to his darker impulses?
As for the actual onscreen happenings, I’m particularly partial to the scenes in which Phyllis read Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) for filth, and Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) owned up to the “messy” way in which he handled the issue of Dominic’s custody; self-awareness looks pretty damn good on Devon.
I also appreciated seeing Devon and Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) communicating on such a deep, intimate level. Prior to Tuesday’s episode, it was common for the couple’s various miseries to play out in lonely vacuums. Sure, Amanda could explain away Devon’s absence during Sutton Ames’s trial, and Devon always had a good excuse for why Amanda wasn’t by his side when it seemed he needed her most, but it all rang rather hollow.
I do, however, have to question Adam’s reference to Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) being his “little sister.” I know my Young and the Restless history, so I’m well aware that the order of Victor Newman’s offspring is – Victoria Nicole, Nicholas Christian, Victor Newman Jr, AKA Adam, and Abby Rachel. Can Josh Griffith and his writing team say the same?
* Delicious Dialogue Courtesy of The Young and the Restless:
Phyllis: You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to gift you with our very special Resurrection Rejuvenation treatment.
Diane: I am dying to hear more.
Phyllis: Oh, you’re going to love it. I mean, I haven’t done it myself, but I hear that it digs, digs down, and brings out the best in someone. People describe it as, oh, I don’t know, coming back from the dead. But I don’t know about that…
* I’d kill – pun very much intended – to know the name of that old radio murder mystery that Noah Newman (Rory Gibson) and Allie Nguyen (Kelsey Wang) thrilled to. London, fog, sleepwalking, axes, a guilty conscious manifesting as a poltergeist, a twist in the last act – what’s not to love?
