A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: Like Father, Like Son & Crazy Moms

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: The Critic Offers HIS Take

There’s not much I’ve been liking about The Young and the Restless as of late — heck, there’s nothing much to like as of late — but I’ll be damned [and I nailed that Eric Braeden impression by the way!] if I don’t see some potential with Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) adopting his pops’ “Smilin’ Jack The Lad” persona. Smarmy, sensual, self-aggrandizing, and foolhardy [damn, I ran out of “s” words] Kyle is the Kyle that I’ve been begging for for years now.

In fact, I’ve pitched “Smilin’ Kyle” here in this very column — not that I think Josh Griffith ever takes any notice of Moi’s opinions/efforts at playing armchair headwriter.

Here is the rub: When Mealor debuted in the role of Kyle back in 2018 the descriptors “smarmy, sensual, self-aggrandizing, and foolhardy” indeed applied. He was “Smilin’ Kyle.” And look what we wound up with. I blame Lola (Sasha Calle) and her dislike of designer purses. That little girl has a lot to answer for.

So, who’s to say that we’re not looking at yet another blip, a quick walk on the wild side — a wallow in Audra’s (Zuleyka Silver) bed — that will eventually culminate in Kyle issuing heaping Mea culpas, and resuming his duties as super-dad and devoted lover? Is it even worth exerting the effort necessary to get excited?

Further Y&R Musings

* As mentioned last week, this show is once again hoofing it to dry well that is Jack (Peter Bergman) vs. Billy (Jason Thompson) for control of Jabot. Josh Griffith must be as deliriously dehydrated as us fans.

* So, I get that Y&R has decided to take Star Trek‘s “back to the status quo” approach where Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and her storyline are concerned — no lessons learned for this gal — but do we really need to be forced to watch megalomaniacal mommy meddle in Daniel’s (Michael Graziadei) already (needlessly) over-complicated love life?

* ‘Tis a pity getting that master’s in counseling didn’t hone Sharon’s (Sharon Case) ability to read people. Adam (Mark Grossman) is playing her like a Stradivarius and make no mistake.
