A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: Embittered, Contrived & Tipsy Fun

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

The Young and the Restless Critic's Review for December 5 – December 9, 2022

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

Is it just me, or did The Young and the Restless miss a major beat in Nicholas Newman’s (Joshua Morrow) and Sally Spectra’s (Courtney Hope) storyline? One minute he’s doing his best Droopy impression and she’s doubling down on not being a bit sorry that she slept with Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) in a last-ditch — and apparently successful — effort to get him out of her system, and the next they’re at Society enjoying each other’s company and he’s defending her to his embittered, hypocritical daughter. Huh?

Is it just me, or did Audra Charles (Zuleyka Silver) and Tucker McCall’s (Trevor St. John) hookup come out of absolute nowhere, and no, I’m not meaning in an, “Oh my gosh, I totally didn’t see that coming, what an exciting development,” kind of way, but instead an, “This had no basis in the context of their previously established dynamic and served only to titillate and further muddy the waters in regard to Tucker’s pursuit of Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson),” one.

Is it just me, or is it past time for Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) and Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) to call it quits? How about for Abby Newman-Abbott Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) to finally take some responsibility and fess up to stepping out on her husband? And wouldn’t it be only right for Abby to give Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd) HIS FAMILY HOUSE back?

Is it just me or does Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) no longer have any rooting value? I, for one, find it difficult to feel sorry for stupid characters, especially characters that have never been written to be as stupid as The Young and the Restless is making Jack out to be.

I mean, the man barely batted an eyelash when Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) confessed, “Oh, by the way, you remember the last time I told you I’d come clean about “everything, everything” and I promised no more surprises even though I’d already sworn previously — and on more than one occasion — that there would be nothing left to admit…yea, I lied. Turns out I stole beaucoups of money from Jeremy Stark [James Hyde]. Whoopsie!”

What do you think? Post a comment!

And is it just me or does it seem like Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) just goes out of his way to be a garbage person these days? Abby point blank tells him, I don’t want Tucker around my child, and the first chance Devon gets he invites Tucker over to bond with Dominic and then acts surprised, even a little hurt that Abby isn’t thrilled by his action. Oh, and his excuse? Well, I thought you were on your way to being okay with it. Um….okay…because that’s how things work now, I guess.

Then there’s Devon taking utter exception to Lily wondering why his betrayal of Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) pales in comparison to Nate Hasting’s (Sean Dominic) attempted betrayal of the family and declaring that the major difference is that he’s so very sorry that he engaged in such practices — but is he? He doesn’t really seem to be. If you look up ‘insincere’ in the dictionary I’m pretty sure there’s a picture of Devon serving as an example.

Do you know how I know that he’s not actually sorry — aside from the obvious? Because this is not the first time, nor do I expect it will be the last that Devon beds someone he’s not supposed to. Is it just me, or does anybody else remember Hilary Curtis WINTERS (Mishael Morgan)?

Further Y&R Musings

* Pissy, tipsy, messy Nicholas is fun. I like him. I want more of him!
