The Young and the Restless spoilers tease troubled waters ahead for Nick Newman and Phyllis Summers. These two got their daughter Summer Newman Abbott married to Kyle Abbott, and now it seems like they might be headed to splitsville. And as always, Kyle’s father, Jack Abbott, is there with a shoulder for his ex to lean on.
Young and The Restless: Here’s Why Phack No Longer Works
Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) appears to lean on Jack (Peter Bergman) a lot actually. And while a Phyllis and Jack reunion is being teased by the show, we find it incredibly difficult to see how these two exes make it back together.
Although it happened when Stafford wasn’t portraying Phyllis, it’s difficult to forget that “Red” did the unthinkable. She slept with Jack’s brother, Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson). We can’t see Jack ever truly overcoming that.
Yes, it’s Genoa City, and yes, crazy things happen all the time in the soap opera world. Even so, the way Phyllis blew things up with Jack seemed final. We understand that Jack is growing older, and he’s lonely. Plus, The Young and the Restless doesn’t know what to do with him these days, so he certainly needs a viable storyline.
Jack hasn’t managed to find any meaningful long-term relationship since he split with Phyllis after her deep betrayal. Even so, this feels like a reunion of convenience, which cheats viewers out of something real. Just because the writers and producers can’t figure out how to get Jack a real romance doesn’t mean he should settle for Phyllis after all she’s done to him. Yes, we know Jack is no saint either, and we also understand that people deserve second chances.
And, let’s face it — it’s weird for Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Summer (Hunter King) to be both husband and wife and step-siblings.
A Forced Breakup
The other problem with a Phyllis and Nick (Joshua Morrow) breakup on The Young and the Restless is that it feels forced. These two have been happy together for some time now. Yes, we realize that Nick’s family always causes some friction, but to be fair, Nick’s family is also Summer’s family, so Phyllis won’t escape it.
We know that Nick and Phyllis seem to be good-time romantic partners, and they always have been. Their relationship isn’t typically that deep, but why break up now? It looks like they’re bored (or perhaps the writers were?), so they’ve decided to split.
There’s nothing wrong with their relationship. At least there should be something big to break them up. After all, why waste all these months together? In the end, we’re just not buying the likely Phick breakup or the looming Phack reunion. It feels too forced.
