A Critic’s Review of The Young and the Restless: Disaster And Disdain

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

Another week, another disastrous standalone episode. Time and time again, fans have expressed their disdain for the stories currently being penned for Abby Chancellor (Melissa Ordway), so what does The Young and the Restless choose to do? They double down and present an hour recapping all the wrong that has been done since Chance and Abby got married and decided to start a family.

Then, to add insult to injury, the soap allowed every scene that viewers wanted to see – including Christine Blair Williams (Lauralee Bell) deliver the news of Chance’s predicament to Nina Webster (Tricia Cast) – to play out offscreen.

Which shouldn’t be surprising, seeing as how half of The Young and the Restless’ storylines are playing out off-camera.

Equally frustrating is everyone’s – bar Abby – seeming acceptance of Chance’s death. Firstly, half of Genoa City has been declared dead only to return fit as a fiddle – Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) included. Secondly, we’ve been hit over the head with how Chance never took his wedding ring or watch off; so, shouldn’t those items have been accompanied by a corresponding body part (i.e., a finger with the ring, and an arm with the watch)? Far as we know, an excavation team merely found the trinkets lying amongst the rubble.

And speaking of story points that annoy us…we can understand Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) being so thick he can’t spot an obvious setup, but Lily Winters (Christel Khalil)? She should be intelligent enough to know that Victor’s on retainer PI isn’t dumb enough to speak of Newman family business in a public setting – with the enemy sitting within earshot. It just doesn’t pass the smell test.

Further Y&R Musings

* Wednesday’s Rashomon inspired Young and Restless, in which Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) each relayed their version of their relationship ending dust up – before the scene played out in full to reveal hidden truths, and misunderstanding – was inspired.

* It was a nice touch having Sharon Rosales (Sharon Chase) take a private moment to remember her late daughter, Cassie, in the midst of all the mourning for Chance.

The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Genoa City, check out all the latest that’s been posted on Y&R spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
