The Young and the Restless has produced some of the most unlikely supercouples in the history of daytime. Most times, it’s a case of opposites attracting but Y&R’s next potential super-duo may be comprised of two individuals who have much in common — Adam Newman and Sally Spectra.
Adam and Sally have come into each other’s orbits at an interesting time. In a way, Adam’s starting off with a clean slate. He’s made inroads with his family by donating a kidney to his niece Faith Newman (Reylynn Caster) and is heading up Newman Media. Given his troubled past, most of which has been of his own making, Adam can relate to Sally (Courtney Hope) wanting a fresh start. He can also relate to being treated like the town pariah.
Adam and Sally really don’t know each other all that well, so they can spend lots of time finding out about one another. Imagine the two of them trading horror stories about their respective pasts over a drink at Society? “I let Sharon think her daughter Faith had died but I really care about her,” Adam could tell Sally. The red-haired transplant from Los Angeles could say, “I let people think I was dying so I could win back my old boyfriend. Later, I tied his girlfriend to a radiator so I could have sex with said boyfriend and become pregnant with his child, ensuring our future.”
Adam and Sally have much in common that they’re both singles on The Young and the Restless, aptly fitting the show’s title. Adam will always care for Sharon but she is committed to her husband Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso). Sally is licking her wounds, having been dumped by Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) not once but twice. The only other woman really in Adam’s orbit these days is Chloe Mitchell Fisher (Elizbeth Hendrickson) and we can’t see those two having a fling given their tragic backstory. (Adam is responsible for the death of her daughter, Delia.)
While Sally and Adam have a lot in common, they do come from different socio-economic backgrounds. Translation: Sally’s a “have-not” and Adam is loaded with Newman money. He could help finance any venture she’d be interested in pursuing. Adam knows that Sally has rubbed many people including the Newmans and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) the wrong way — courtesy of Sally trying to manipulate Summer Newman. While that has turned many people off to Sally, Adam is almost intrigued by it. He may figure “any foe of Phyllis’s is a friend of mine?”
So, if and when Adam wants to ruffle some feathers in town, he knows that walking into an event with Sally on his arm will get tongues wagging. Adam’s apparently turned over a new leaf and Sally’s greatest crime in Genoa City is getting Summer her dream job. Both characters deserve a break. Maybe they’ll find one with each other?
