Brady Black has seen his share of action (and shirtless) scenes over the years on Days of our Lives. Soap Hub chatted with his portrayer, Eric Martsolf, about how he stays in shape. One of his secrets is that he keeps working out a family affair.
As followers of Martsolf’s social media accounts are aware, the actor, his wife Lisa, and twin sons Mason and Chase are a family that not only stays together but stays in shape together!
Soap Hub: Do you have a typical workout routine?
Eric Martsolf: It’s hard, I do it very randomly because our schedule at DAYS changes week to week. I’ve tried to become an early morning guy. That’s the most regimented I can get. But that can go out the window. I fit it in whenever I can. My feeling is you can always find a half an hour to break a sweat or to do something. Recently, my wife and I became that couple that walks the neighborhood. We started walking around and we laughed, ‘We’ve become the couple the walks around the neighborhood!’ We found some long hills and we started walking them. I’m a sweaty mess afterward.
Soap Hub: What else do you do to work out?
Eric Martsolf: I’d been doing Peloton since COVID hit, and I have made a makeshift gym in my garage, but it’s okay to get out in nature. The roads and hills and lakes and oceans are hard. They will beat you into shape just as much as any $100-a-month gym will. Don’t be afraid of getting creative and getting out there.
I will usually bike for 45 minutes. I’ll take a Peloton class. I’ll hit weights and I would say 75% of the time I’m joined by one of my twin boys — who can lift what I lift, bench what I bench. They’ve gotten into it. They’re my goal! (Laughs) My little boys have become my fitness goals. They’re lean and strong. Their [playing] water polo has a lot to do with that. There’s nothing better than swimming, and they’re in the pool a lot.
Soap Hub: Sounds like you prefer working out with someone else.
Eric Martsolf: Yes. I think that when you work out with a friend or someone else it’s definitely more productive. Working out doesn’t have to be a lonely thing. That other person can help push you to limits you didn’t think you could hit. Now, my sons are doing that for me. It’s crazy.
Soap Hub: Do you meditate?
Eric Martsolf: I haven’t. Maybe that’s something I’m going to find in my next decade? I see the value and I’ve heard about the value of it. It’s not meditative, but having a date night with my wife is. I feel the same philosophy in that you have to get away from the noise somehow — whether you’re connecting with your spouse or someone else, it’s important to connect with someone in a quiet space. I’ve got two 16-year-old boys, who have lots of friends, and three dogs…[so having a date night with my wife] is a good thing to do.
Soap Hub: What advice do you have for anyone looking to get started on a fitness program?
Eric Martsolf: Try to find somebody who has the same goal. Find someone who will encourage you, call you to get your butt out of bed at 6:30 in the morning. Someone who’s not going to take an excuse. You need someone in your corner. You don’t need to pay a trainer thousands of dollars a year. You just need a friend. If you’re having trouble getting motivated, find someone else who also wants to get in shape, and that way you can do it together. Team up and make it happen.
