Viewers are getting to see more of Chandler Massey these days now that he and his character Will Horton are appearing — and showering — in the peacock series Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem. Soap Hub chatted with the actor about how he got back in shape a few years ago for this week’s installment of Wellness Wednesday.
Soap Hub: You tweeted out “before and after” photos of you a little over two years ago showing your workout progress. What prompted you to share?
Chandler Massey: I turned 30 last year; I’m about to turn 31 and [as I was leading up to turning 30], I wanted to re-commit to having a healthy lifestyle. Being camera-ready is important but I wanted to care less about fads and be more process-oriented than results-oriented. I don’t weigh myself anymore or use the tape measure on my waist every day like I did in the past.
What’s your take on diet and nutrition?
I try to eat things that make me feel good and make sure I’m eating for the right reasons. I tend to eat when I’m bored, happy, or sad. So, now, I ask myself what’s motivating my desire to go to an all-you-can-eat Korean barbeque. Is it that I’m hungry or is it that I had a crappy day and want to put an adhesive bandage on it?
We tend to overshare on social media. Do you feel it’s better to focus on achieving goals privately as opposed to inviting external forces to weigh in, which can be both a positive and a negative?
I think so. I have read a few studies that said the more public you make your goals the less likely you are to achieve them because just talking about your goals can give you a pseudo-sense accomplishment and that can erode your motivation.
What advice would you have for someone getting started or re-started as they try to get in shape?
Be prepared to forgive yourself. It’s not going to be a straight line. In fact, it can be super rocky to getting the results you want. If you reverse your progress for a weekend, a week, or even a couple of weeks, the important thing is to keep going. It’s a case of taking two steps forward and one step backwards, you keep going.
