One of the many stories The Bold and the Beautiful could visit now that Deacon is back on the canvas is who are his parents? We know about Deacon’s abusive stepdad but what about his biological mother and father? Recently, Sean Kanan, Deacon’s portrayer, gave some insights into Deacon’s need for a mother.
Sean Kanan Says Deacon Needed A Mother Figure
Sean Kanan recently appeared on B&B’s in-house YouTube talk show BOLD Live hosted by the show’s supervising producer Casey Kasprzyk to chat about his return to the half-hour series. B&B super-fan Matt Hanvey, known for his hilarious and spot-on social media videos that poke fun at daytime drama, was a guest on the show. He shared three of his favorite ‘Deacon’ moments including one in which an emotional Deacon collapsed into the arms of matriarch Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery).
“I remember that day very vividly,” Kanan said on BOLD Live. “We shot it a few different ways. I was very adamant about one of the takes [in particular] being used. [The control booth] called up to Brad. They literally stopped production [to do that].”
Kanan says the show’s executive producer/head writer, Bradley Bell, mulled it over and chose which version would appear in the show. “[Brad] was kind enough to use the take I was championing,” Kanan says.
Sean Kanan Reveals Secret Connection
Kanan calls Flannery a ‘force of nature,’ which may have inspired him to create in his mind a dynamic between their two characters. “I always played in the back of my head that Stephanie was Deacon’s mother,” Kanan says, hastening to add, “Not that she was actually Deacon’s [biological] mother but he had a caring and a soft spot for her.”
The actor inferred that his co-star was onboard with the idea. “As that went on, Susan picked up on it and we began to form a very unlikely and strange relationship on-screen,” Kanan says. The offbeat dynamic helped make Deacon more human. “There was nothing redeemable about Deacon in Stephanie’s eyes, initially. But as things went on, we put some colors into it that maybe weren’t what obviously was there. She was absolutely tremendous to work with.”
During his appearance on BOLD Live, Kanan raved about all his B&B colleagues. “I have had the privilege of working with so many terrific actors over the years.” Flannery, he says, “brought out things in me as an actor that I didn’t know I had.”
