The Bold and the Beautiful is a half-hour show that’s always delivered double the dose of romance for its faithful viewers.
The show, which is celebrating 34 years on the air next month, wasted no time establishing romances and relationships on the show. In the first episode, Ridge (then, Ronn Moss; now, Thorsten Kaye) proposed to Caroline (Joanna Johnson). Was it true love — or Ridge just wanting to stick it to Caroline’s controlling dad Bill Spencer Sr. (Jim Storm)?
More clear was the tension between Eric (John McCook) and Stephanie (Susan Flannery), who were experiencing much malaise in their nearly 30-year marriage. The show established the angst of young love, too, with Katie (then, Nancy Sloan; now, Heather Tom) dealing with acne and unrequited feelings from rebel Rocco (Bryan Genesse).
As the show headed into the 1990s, widower Ridge was torn between Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Taylor (Hunter Tylo), marrying them both along the way. Warring fashion families caused disharmony between songbirds Macy (Bobbie Eakes) and Thorne (Jeff Trachta; Winsor Harmon). Sally Spectra (Darlene Conley) entered a marriage that was more like a merger with Clarke Garrison (Dan McVicar).
Eric became the marrying man, wedding Brooke in Palm Springs and later, Sheila in Los Angeles — despite the disapproval of nearly his entire family. He also wed Donna (Jennifer Gareis).
There was an emphasis on young love, too. Ingenue Jessica Forrester (Maitland Ward) fell for Forrester intern Dylan Shaw (Dylan Neal), who turned to stripping to pay for school. Rick Forrester (Jacob Young) became a teen and fell for his babysitter Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz).
In the first decade of the 2000s, Ridge continued to bounce back and forth between Brooke and Taylor (who bounced back between life and death). Brooke fell for Ridge’s half-brother Nick (Jack Wagner). Ridge briefly dated Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), who had come to the west coast for a while.
Next, Eric and Stephanie’s epic love story came to an end after she passed away from cancer. Ridge re-wed Brooke once more. They’ve split once or twice since then but their legendary love story endures. Last year, Brooke thought she had lost Ridge to Shauna (Denise Richards), but even if Ridge and Shauna’s Las Vegas marriage had been legal (it wasn’t), he was always going to choose his beloved “Logan.”
New characters and new love relationships and triangles and even quadrangles populate the BB canvas today. Eric has reunited with Quinn (Rena Sofer). Finn (Tanner Novlan) is the new man in Steffy’s (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) life. Also, Hope (Annika Noelle) and Liam (Scott Clifton) are facing continued conflict courtesy of his drunken fling with Steffy.
Will Zoe (Kiara Barnes) find love with Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) or Zende (Delon de Metz)? Katie has a tough decision as to whether or not she’ll reunite with Bill (Don Diamont). And could this be the year that Charlie (Dickie Christie) and Pam (Alley Mills) finally tie the knot? Stay tuned! The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes.
