At their best, soaps both entertain and educate. That’s certainly what happened when The Bold and the Beautiful did Katie’s kidney transplant storyline. Now, Katie’s portrayer, Heather Tom, is speaking out on the importance of being a live organ donor.
As BB viewers saw, Katie’s life was saved after her estranged niece Flo (Katrina Bowden) donated her kidney to her aunt. Tom, a multiple Daytime Emmy winner, recently told Parade that BB executive producer/head writer tells stories that have a message.
“[Brad] focuses a lot on things that people can get information from, or learn from, or can relate to on a larger scale,” the actress said. “I think it’s great that we can tell a story like this and he did a really lovely job with it.”
The actress compared the difference between living and non-living donors. “Having a live donor is actually more beneficial than having a deceased donor,” Tom noted. “I know that for me, if anything happens to me, just take whatever you want because I’m not using it anymore.
“So, I think everyone should be an organ donor, but if you have the opportunity and the will to do something like give a kidney to somebody and be a live donor, that’s just amazing and a step above anything else.”
Will Flo’s selfless act earn her forgiveness from Katie and the Logans over her role in the kidnapping of baby Beth?
“Whether it’s okay for others, whether it’s enough for others, remains to be seen, but I think that for Katie she’s willing to say, ‘You know what? I get to live, so I think I can forgive you for what happened.” The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
