The Bold and the Beautiful actress Heather Tom (Katie) has a well-earned reputation for being one of daytime drama’s most intelligent actresses. In recent years, the five-time Emmy-winner has explored work as a director. Now, Tom has completed a directing gig, which viewers will likely see next year!
Heather Tom: Behind The Camera
According to her Instagram, Tom recently wrapped her directorial debut on Good Trouble, the spinoff of The Fosters, which airs on Freeform. Tom’s episode, according to the actress, will be the series’ Valentine’s Day show.
“Had such an amazing experience directing #goodtrouble,” Tom posted on social media, adding, “thank you to everyone @freeform !! this show was soooo intense and so much fun! And thank you to the awesome cast and crew!…It’s the #valentines day episode so be sure to tune in!!”
There’s a connection between Freeform’s Good Trouble and Tom. The cable series was created and is executive produced by Joanna Johnson, who has played Karen Spencer on the half-hour soap, sister-in-law of Tom’s Katie. Good Trouble was created by Johnson, Peter Paige, and Bradley Bredeweg.
A while back, Katie and Karen shared screen-time on BB when Katie, split from Bill (Don Diamont) at the time, made a powerplay for control of Spencer Publications. Karen opted to throw her weight in Katie’s direction. They were able to temporarily dethrone Bill from his position as the company’s top chief.
Daytime has a history of well-known actors stepping behind the camera to direct. In addition to Tom, other daytime actresses who’ve become directors include Francesca James (ex-Kitty/Kelly, All My Children), Ellen Wheeler (ex-Marley/Vicky, Another World), Susan Flannery (ex-Stephanie, BB), and Alison Sweeney (ex-Sami, Days of Our Lives).
Tom has not only directed at BB, but earlier this summer she directed an episode of The Young and the Restless. You can watch past episodes of Good Trouble on Freeform.Go.Com. The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
