When 2020 ended, there was the hope that 2021 wouldn’t be as brutal a year in losses but that hope never came to pass. The coronavirus pandemic continued to wreak havoc and change lives for people everywhere. It has also seen the soap world lose a lot of beloved stars from our favorite shows present and past, day in and day out.
As 2021 comes to a close, Soap Hub remembers the many beloved members of Days of our Lives, General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and the rest of the soap community who passed away during the year. You can click on each person’s name to read about them.
January 1: Richard Sarradet was known best to soap audiences as GH attorney Howard Lansing. He was 74 years old.
January 9: John Reilly was beloved as WSB agent Sean Donely on GH and Dan on As the World Turns. He was 84 years old.
January 14: Peter Mark Richman was known for having played Blake Carrington’s lawyer on Dynasty and was the first CC Capwell on Santa Barbara. He was 93 years old.
January 23: Hal Holbrook, who appeared on The Brighter Day early in his incredible career, had a Tony win, an Oscar nomination, and was an Emmy winner. He was 95 years old.
January 28: Cicely Tyson, a silver-screen legend and Tony Award winner, was on Guiding Light back in the 1960s. She was 96 years old.
February 12: Christopher Pennock was best known for his roles on Dark Shadows, General Hospital, and Guiding Light. He was 76 years old.
February 21: Rod Arrants was known mostly for his role as Travis on Search for Tomorrow but also had roles on Y&R and DAYS. He passed away at age 76.
February 23: Geoffrey Scott was Billy Lewish on GL, Sky Rumson on Dark Shadows, and tennis pro Mark Jennings, Krystal’s first husband on Dynasty. He was 79 years old.
March 2: Gil Rogers was best known as that awful Ray Gardner on All My Children and beloved as GL’s Hawk Shayne. He was 87 years old.
March 14: Henry Darrow is best known for his Daytime Emmy-winning role as Rafael Castillo, Cruz’s dad on Santa Barbara. He was 87 years old.
March 26: Jessica Walter, beloved for her role as Lucille on Arrested Development, got her start on Love of Life. She was 80 years old.
April 5: Mary Linda Rapelye, known for roles on both As the World Turns (Maggie) and One Life to Live (Faith), she passed away at 76.
April 29: Billie Hayes was beloved by children everywhere as Witchiepoo in H.R. Pufnstuf, GH viewers loved her as Robert Scorpio’s WSB mentor, O’Reilly. She was 96 years old.
May 7: Tawny Kitaen was known to soap audiences as Lisa DiNapoli on Santa Barbara and Meredith Ross on Capitol. She was 59 years old.
May 27: Robert Hogan was perhaps best known to daytime fans as family patriarch Vince McKinnon on Another World. He was 87 years old.
June 10: Ray MacDonnell was beloved by All My Children fans as the patriarch of the Martin clan, Dr. Joe Martin. He was 93 years old.
June 11: John Gabriel was perhaps best known to the soap world as Dr. Seneca Beaulac on Ryan’s Hope. He was 90 years old.
June 14: Lisa Banes portrayed Eve McBain on One Life to Live and was paid tribute by her onscreen son, Michael Easton. She was 65 years old.
June 29: Stuart Damon was beloved for his decades as Dr. Alan Quartermaine; co-star Leslie Charleson shared incredible memories with Soap Hub. He passed away at 84.
June 30: Micki Grant was best known for her role on Another World, where she played Peggy Harris Nolan. She was 80 years old.
July 1: Philece Sampler was best known as Renée DiMera on Days of our Lives and also played Donna Love on Another World. She was 67 years old.
July 20: Bergen Williams won the hearts of GH fans as Big Alice, the maid at the Quartermaine mansion. She was 62 years old.
July 29: Jay Pickett portrayed a few characters on soaps but he was an original cast member on Port Charles, playing Detective Frank Scanlan. He was 60 years old.
August 23: Michael Nader was loved as Dex Dexter to primetime fans of Dynasty and one of Erica Kane’s husbands on All My Children — Dimitri Marick. He was 76 years old.
September 28: Michael Tylo was known by soap fans for a few roles but he was beloved as Quinton McCord on Guiding Light. He was 73 years old.
October 26: Linda Carlson was known to DAYS fans as Dr. Elaine Schaefer and had a short role on Passions. She was 76 years old.
November 10: Jerry Douglas ruled the Abbott family with a warm heart for years as John Abbott. He passed away two days shy of his 89th birthday.
November 24: Lisa Brown was a muse for the legendary Douglas Marland, having been both Nola Reardon on Guiding Light and Iva Snyder on As the World Turns. She was 67 years old.
November 29: Arlene Dahl was not only mother to B&B alum Lorenzo Lamas, but she was loved by OLTL fans as Lucinda. She was 96 years old.
January 31: Betty White graced a couple of soaps but her Ann Douglas on B&B touched our hearts. She passed a few weeks shy of turning 100 years old.
