On the heels of Carter’s takeover of Forrester Creations on The Bold and the Beautiful,l and his subsequent relinquishing that control back to The Forresters, comes the heartbreaking story of Liam’s latest predicament. It’s been a while since Liam has been in a front-burner storyline, and it’s a doozy because he has an inoperable brain tumor. Liam’s real-world alter ego, Scott Clifton, opened up about what led to this gut-wrenching tale.
The Liam Conundrum
Scott Clifton joined the Michael Fairman Channel and explained that up until recently, Liam had been written into a corner. He noted that executive producer Brad Bell agreed that because Liam “had burned all these bridges,” there wasn’t any way to make him sympathetic. Since Liam hadn’t learned any lessons from his behavior, his numerous mistakes made it hard for the character to grow.
“I kind of felt like Liam had hit this wall and sort of outlived his…usefulness in terms of, like, storytelling,” the actor explained. Clifton remarked that having lived through Liam’s life, he fully understood why the character ended up in a place with no evolution, and he himself couldn’t have imagined where to take Liam next. From Love Triangles to Brain Tumors
Clifton explained that Bell agreed that Liam’s constant love triangles with Hope (Annika Noelle) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) had run their course. “I agree that…it’d be hard to keep trying to tell that story with Liam,” he stated. The actor remarked that he was glad Bell took some time to figure out where Liam should go next.
He knew his work on the show was excellent, so the issue wasn’t him as an actor, saying, “It was just a storytelling problem.” Finally, Bell came up with Liam’s latest hardship and told the actor, “I’m going to work you again, but here’s the story.” Clifton remained tight-lipped about it, adding, “I can’t tell you how the rest of that conversation went.”
