Deacon Sharpe is about to find out that good help is hard to find. James Corden (host, The Late, Late Show with James Corden) recently dropped by Il Giardino to work was a member of the establishment’s wait staff. Hilarity ensued.
James Corden wasn’t alone when he visited The Bold and the Beautiful set to appear on the show. Lil Nas X (born Montero Lamar Hill) accompanied him. The rapper was cast as a waiter with lines; Corden played a background artist. He had no lines or a character name, but the host suggested to B&B producer/director Cindy Popp that he be called “Craig.”
Corden has done soap opera sketches on his show in the past, including a memorable one with Christine Baranski (The Good Fight; ex-Jewel Maniscalo, All My Children). This time, he playfully acted miffed that the That’s What I Want singer had lines, and he did not. “Have they got lines?” Corden asked, referring to scene partners Sean Kanan (Deacon) and Annika Noelle (Hope). “Yes,” Popp replied. “Because they are the stars of the show.”
Lil Nas X admitted to being a bit nervous prior to shooting the scenes. The two guests gave themselves a tour of the studio as they wandered into a prison set. (According to Hope and Deacon’s dialogue in the sketch, it appears that Sheila has not escaped the long arm of the law!) Then, they took their places on the Il Giardino set. Popp directed the performers, instructing them on what they’d be doing in the scene.
Most soap actors know better than to ask a lot of questions and/or make changes to scenes on the day those scenes are being shot, but soap novices Corden and Lil Nas X weren’t so savvy. “Hang on, gotta back up,” Corden told Kanan and Noelle. “You’re the boss of Il Giardino, and you’re his daughter?”
“Is there a world where I’m [Deacon’s] son and this whole time [he] didn’t know?” suggested Lil Nas X. Popp politely gave the duo a quick lesson in soap opera production. “In daytime, we move very quickly,” she kindly said. “I only have a certain amount of time to get the scene done. I appreciate your enthusiasm, though.”
Corden got some laughs when he purposely overloaded his arms with breadstick containers that he was supposed to place on tables in the background. The host’s antics caused Lil Nas X to break character and laugh, delaying briefly the completion of the scenes. Fortunately, the cameos were eventually completed.
According to Corden, his visit to the show was more than a comical sketch that ran on his late-night show. He and Lil Nas X truly will appear on B&B on Wednesday, April 19. “Have a look for it,” Corden says with a smile. “See if you can spot us.”
