On The Bold and the Beautiful, Deacon Sharpe is turning his life around trying to show both his daughter Hope and her mother Brooke that he’s a changed man. Deacon’s portrayer, Sean Kanan, knows all about harnessing the ability to achieve much in life.
Kanan, who’s been a member of the soap opera community for 30 years (he got his start as A.J. Quartermaine on General Hospital), is a Daytime Emmy Award-winning producer as the executive producer and star of the Amazon Prime series Studio City. He’s also penned the tome Way of the COBRA, a self-help book that can aid readers in finding their own success — no matter what they want to do in life.
Recently, Kanan was joined by several daytime pals at a reading and autograph session of Way of the COBRA. Soap Hub was on the scene and not only chatted with Kanan about his book, but we also picked up an autographed copy — and it can be yours!
Many know that Kanan, in addition to his many soap opera roles, is also known for his portrayal of Mike Barnes in The Karate Kid III. What people may not know is that Kanan nearly lost the role — not once but two times! Another actor was originally cast in the part, and a short time later, producers reached out to Kanan to offer him the role.
But another twist of fate almost prevented Kanan from making it to the big screen. The actor details in Way of the COBRA that he became ill while in Las Vegas during the holiday production break and needed emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding. Director John Avildsen called Kanan while he was recovering to let him know that he’d have to return to the set in a week or so or else he’d be recast.
Kanan writes that something began to take root deep within him. “I was getting mad,” he writes. “I burned with determination fueled by anger from the injustice visited upon me. I decided right then and there to leave my hospital bed and start the daunting task of rehabilitating myself.”
The actor pushed himself and was able to return to production and complete filming. “With the exception of one driving stunt, I executed every one of my character’s martial arts moves and fight stunts in the film,” he shares.
What does Kanan want readers to learn by reading his book? “I think the one takeaway is what I say in the introduction – everything you need to achieve the success you want already lives within you,” he tells Soap Hub. “You just have to learn how to let it out. That’s what the book does.”
Kate Linder (Esther Valentine, The Young and the Restless) and past and present B&B co-workers Kimberlin Brown (Sheila Carter), Annika Noelle (Hope Logan Spencer), Scott Turner Schofield (ex-Nick; Max, Studio City), and the show’s supervising producer, Casey Kasprzyk, were all on hand for the festivities. “I’m really humbled,” Kanan says to everyone who came to the signing. “It’s amazing that on a beautiful day, on a weekend, we’d have this great turnout to support me.”
