Brooke Logan Forrester hasn’t figured out that her “non-alcoholic” bubbly on New Year’s Eve was swapped out with the real thing. That’s bad news for Brooke but the setup has allowed her portrayer, Katherine Kelly Lang, the ability to flex her acting muscles. For her performance as an alcoholic trying to regain her life, Soap Hub gives Performer of the Week for B&B honors to Lang.
‘Our Miss Brooke’ started the year off horribly – waking up in bed next to Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan), the man who husband Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) loathes. A confused Brooke was trying to unpack a lot. For starters, how did she end up getting plastered in the first place? Making matters worse was Brooke getting hammered with Deacon, moving onto vodka, and New Year’s Eve smooches, and, finally, winding up in bed with him!
Brooke ordered Deacon out so she could play regret and remorse once Ridge came home. She rested her head on her husband’s shoulder and we could see her internal debate. Does she tell him what happened? If so, when? How? While Ridge went off to shower, Brooke replayed moments from the night before where she was tipsy and started flirting back with Deacon. There’s only so much of that that can be blamed on the alcohol.
“What did I do?” Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) cried out with clenched fists unable to figure out why she started drinking again. Later, Hope Logan Spencer (Annika Noelle) let Ridge know that Deacon had shown up for New Year’s Eve. Ridge wasn’t happy about this as to be expected. Brooke tried to downplay Deacon’s presence as she debated internally how much to reveal to her husband about the setbacks she encountered.
Rather than confide in Ridge about what transpired, Brooke picked up the phone and called Deacon for emotional support. (Does she not see this might be making things worse?) Next, Brooke got rid of the bottle of vodka by pouring it onto a defenseless plant. (Cheers, Fern!) She also took a stance with a confused Hope, telling her that Deacon was persona non grata – effectively immediately.
Katherine Kelly Lang got to sink her teeth into the storyline more fully when Brooke confessed to Ridge that she’d fallen off the wagon. She tearfully tried to make sense out of what had happened. Brooke attempted to tie her missing Ridge into taking a drink, still not knowing she didn’t imbibe any alcohol consciously. By the time she’d moved onto vodka, she was already inebriated thanks to Sheila’s switcheroo.
Brooke unburdened half her soul to Ridge and Hope by telling them that she’d gotten drunk but she couldn’t bring herself to share that she’d kissed Deacon and that he’d slept in the same bed with her overnight (and we mean slept with – they didn’t have sex). Lang played Brooke fully aware of how Ridge would explode if he were to learn about this part of the evening.
Brooke shared her relapse at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, still trying to piece together how and why she started drinking. The meeting moderator inquired about Brooke being alone when she was drinking, leaving Katherine Kelly Lang to play Brooke’s predicament two-fold. She’s determined to regain her sobriety but also keep her dalliance with Deacon a secret. Brava to Lang for bringing multiple dimensions to Brooke’s conflict.
