The Bold and the Beautiful has made viewers wait for satisfaction many times over the course of its near-35-year history. One of the secrets that kept viewers on the edge of their seats for so long was when Hope and Liam Spencer would be reunited with baby Beth. Thank goodness, little Douglas refused to be silenced.
It all started as a crime of opportunity. Fate resulted in Hope (Annika Noelle) delivering her baby on Catalina Island alone. Due to weather conditions, Liam (Scott Clifton) had trouble getting to his pregnant wife’s side. Dr. Reese Buckingham (Wayne Brady) was on hand to deliver the baby. In another room, a woman also went into labor and sadly, her baby did not live.
Reese, who was up to his eyeballs in gambling debt, decided to tell Hope that her baby had died. He took the child and sold her to Taylor Hayes and Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) for $50,000 so he’d have funds to pay his demanding creditors.
Liam and Hope split up as Liam started spending more time with his ex-Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and their daughter Kelly and Steffy’s new adopted baby Phoebe (named after her late twin). IN reality, Phoebe was Beth and Beth was Phoebe.
Slowly but surely, characters on The Bold and the Beautiful canvas started to put the pieces together thanks mostly to eavesdropping. Zoe (Kiara Barnes) learned of her dad’s involvement and became a target of the people to whom Reese owed money. Xander (Adain Bradley), Zoe’s boyfriend, and Reese’s pal Flo (Katrina Bowden) also got wind of what happened transpired.
Unfortunately, so did Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) who was driven to re-win Hope’s heart, marry her and have her be mother to his son Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri) as the boy had just lost his mother, the late Caroline (Linsey Godfrey). Thomas is an imposing force and he didn’t hesitate to demand that everyone keep this secret quiet.
Forrester intern Emma Barber (Nia Sioux) learned the truth and died in a fatal car accident before she could share the news with the grieving parents. Zoe feared for her dad if his role baby Beth’s kidnapping came to light. As the months progressed, nearly half the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful knew the truth but no one was stepping up and saying anything. Everyone had too much to lose.
The expression “Out of the mouths of babes” came to mind after Douglas over heard his dad talking about how baby Phoebe was really baby Beth. Ever tell a child not to repeat something? Thomas did his best to coerce his son to remain mum but Douglas recalled his mother telling him to always tell the truth.
Thomas managed to convince Hope to marry him. (She couldn’t resist Douglas wanting her to be his mom.) But Hope couldn’t find a way to fully commit herself to Thomas as his wife. Fortunately, thanks to Douglas, she didn’t have to.
It seemed as if no one was going to stand up to Thomas and let Liam and Hope know that Beth was alive. But when Douglas was alone with Liam he let him now that baby Beth was alive. Liam tried to gently explain to the toddler that Beth was safe and in a better place and would always be alive in the hearts of the people who love and miss her.
Yeah, Douglas meant more than that. The little guy politely waited for Liam to finish his speech on the hereafter and then, he firmly re-stated that Beth was alive. Not only that but Douglas could prove it. A confused Liam took another approach and asked Douglas why he kept saying that?
“Phoebe is Beth,” Douglas reiterated. Douglas’s conviction and Liam going into the nursery and looking into the eyes of “Phoebe” flicked a light switch in Liam’s head. He realized that Douglas was telling the truth and that Phoebe was indeed Beth. Liam picked up his child and held her, as joy filled his body and soul.
Liam’s next step was to tell Hope. He tracked her down at Forrester Creations. Thomas was planning on taking off with Hope but Liam showed up in time and he and Thomas engaged in fisticuffs on top of the Forrester building. Defeated, Thomas ran off. Liam joyfully shared the news with Hope that their daughter was alive. The two tearfully embraced as the sun set and the camera spun around them just like you see in the movies.
The reunion of not only Hope and Liam as a married couple but of Beth with her parents never would have happened if Douglas hadn’t had the courage to speak up and tell the truth as his mother had told him to do on The Bold and the Beautiful.
